Living Sculpture

On Saturday 9th July at 11am local fisherman Dean Thomas and Councillor of Torbay and Brixham Council Vic Ellery became a living replica of the proposed statue which will celebrate the fishing heritage of Brixham and commemorate the fishermen of the town.

Bronze sculpture brought to life by Dean and Vic

The two men posed with ships wheel on King's Quay, having been spray painted from head to toe in metallic paint to recreate the statue.

The event was arranged by members of the charity group F.I.S.H. who are working to raise the funds to produce the £150,000 sculpture.

The bronze statue is to be based upon a drawing by Brixham artist Arthur Briscoe and will be created by Brixham Sculptor Elizabeth Hadley.

Arthur Briscoe often went out with the fishing fleet and drew the men at work on the old wooden sail trawlers, with this particular scene showing a man and boy handling the steering of the boat in a storm.

By bringing the sculpture to life sculptor Elizabeth Hadley said that, ‘she was able to study the relationship more between the figures,' ; the old man, whom she has already begun sculpting, and the young fisherman, who will be modelled by local fisherman Darren Edwards.

Chairman of FISH Miriam Pynn said,” This gives us a chance to imagine what our statue might look like. We also have to try and recreate the trawlers wooden deck in granite and are still hopeful that we might get a donation of granite from a local supplier on Dartmoor.”

Miriam also explained how the statue would be located at the exact spot the sculpture came to life that morning, as the Harbour Authorities had gifted the site right outside the Coastguard station for the bronze sculpture.

Currently funds stand at £19,000 thanks to the generosity of local people, Brixham Town Council, Brixham Trawler Race and many others. Sales of the 2010 ‘Brixham the naked truth calendar have also brought this amount up to this level.

Another fundraising event planned for this year is the concert on the 10th of September at 7pm at All Saints Church, Brixham. Where the well known Port Isaac group, ‘The Fishermen's Friends', will be performing along with Maggie Duffy.

FISH welcomes all donations or any new members who would like to help raise funds.
