Brixham United Under 8's Shine at West Ham Tournament.

After months of anticipation and fundraising, the Under 8's team from Brixham United finally made their way to London last month to play in the George Parris national football tournament. The tournament was hosted at West Ham United's Upton Park Stadium with teams travelling from as far away as Nottinghamshire, Norfolk , Sussex and of course Devon to take part!

Before the tournament the team stayed overnight at the West Ham United hotel which forms part of the stadium and has rooms overlooking the pitch that double up as executive boxes on match days. After a hearty breakfast they spent the following morning seeing some of the sights of London.

The tournament kicked off with all the participating teams running from the tunnel onto the pitch to a fanfare and the applause of the crowd, which must have totalled at least five hundred people! Despite some pre-match nerves Brixham showed excellent form in the group stages and remained unbeaten to top their group, scoring five and conceding no goals on the way!

The semi-final was a much harder tie and the game remained drawn at the final whistle. So, in the tradition of all good cup competitions, it went to penalties. It was a case of deja-vu for the players as they had exited their previous tournament at Tiverton Town FC on penalties at the semi-final stage. This time it was different, the boys held their nerve and were victorious by five goals to four. The final proved just one step to far and the team were defeated by a side from Norfolk who have not lost a game for over two years!

However, it really didn't matter. The boys had performed way beyond expectations and their proud faces and those of their parents when they were each presented with a runners-up trophy by George Parris, the legendary West Ham player, was testament to that.

The boys and Kevin and Jason on the management team would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped us raise the funds to go to the tournament through sponsorship, lending us facilities or donating raffle prizes. Particular thanks to Maunders Funeral Services for providing the team with brand new tracksuits to wear on the day!
