The final league placings are in and congratulations go to the Ladies of BSM.  They are winners of The Gallery League Division 6 and secure promotion back to Division 5. Well done to all the girls involved over the season.

BSM Men finished  comfortably in mid table in the Mid Devon League Division 2 but still in the melting pot is whether the BSM Riviera Mixed Triples Team can retain the trophy for another year.

This team again had a good result last week.  This time it was away at Totnes were a tight match was decided by 1 shot, giving BSM another valuable 6 points.
Result (BSM Skips first):
Jan Dugmore                15                Terry Sloman            17
John Hudson                 15                Lindsey Tremeary     24

Ken Short                      24               Betty Cawthorne       12.

The last game of the season sees BSM visit Upton Park in what could be a defining match for deciding if the RMT Trophy resides at BSM for another year.

Unfortunately the Over 55s met with defeat again in the final match of their season.  This time it was away at Paignton Torbay. Going down on both rinks it finished 45 shots to 43, close but no prize this time. Still well done lads for a good first effort at this competition.

BSM Finals Weekend took place over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of September.  All finals were keenly contested and in general were very close results.  Congratulations to all the winners and better luck next time to all of the runners up.  As usual a great big vote of thanks goes to our long suffering Competition Organiser, Ken Short.

Although the competitive season draws to a close the next two weeks will be busy ones for BSM as a whole. Both of your Captains still need your support in fulfilling these fixtures. So don't give up yet there is still plenty of bowling left in the outdoor season before you can all disappear into the warmth of Indoors.

The weekend of the 3rd and 4th of September is Club Finals weekend at BSM.

All the club finals will be played at this time with the exception of the Ladies Championship.  This final took place on the 24th of August between Jenny Hughes and Hazel Yeomans.  After a battle lasting 25 ends victory was finally achieved by Hazel Yeomans by 21 shots to 17.  This now entitles Hazel to enter the last Champion of Champions Competition.   Well done to both competitors for a well fought and sporting contest were, alas, there could only be one winner on the day.

The league season is nearly now at an end. However there are still one or two games still to complete.  On the 24 August the BSM Over 55s took on Marldon but were beaten on both rinks to go down by 24 shots to 46.  After a shaky start to the season the middle went well.  However the pace would seem to too hot for the team to handle as the season finishes.  On the whole this team has exceeded expectations as a first time attempt.  Next year should see an improvement with the experience gained from this.  Well done lads!

BSM still harbour an outside chance of getting something out of the 2011 season in the Riviera Mixed Triples.  This time it was a hard won 6 points from the game against one of the RMT front runners, Victoria.  Wins on two rinks and a loss on the other meant 4 points were gained but the overall scores were tied on 51 shots each giving each team a further two points.  All is still in the melting pot for honours in this league with only one more game to play away at Totnes.

Thursday saw the annual battle of the sexes between BSM Ladies and Gents.  I would just like to say that it was a good job that rain curtailed this game before things got too out of hand!!  The Gents eventually ran out winners and will retain the Trophy at their end of the Clubhouse for another year but the main thing was that all of those taking part enjoyed the game, contrary to my last comments.  Well done to all taking part in this annual funfest.

Last Sunday saw the BSM Charity Pairs taking place.

Each year the BSM Ladies and Mens Captains select a charity that the club will support.  This year it was Help for Heroes.  Various means are used to swell the funds but the main event is always the Charity Pairs competition.

Teams comprising a lady and man compete against each other in different formats for the honour of holding the Ken Short Cup for one year.  This year the winners were Richard Penfold and Margaret Harrison from BSM.  They also received a prize each given by the Ladies and Mens Captains, Christine Philipson and Eddie Curl.

Whilst members of the club put in great efforts in supporting the selected Charity BSM also boasts a jazz band.  The band called Deja Vu are all members of the club and raised £325 with concerts given on the Old Fish Quay at Brixham.  The band wish to give their sincere thanks to all who gave so generously at these concerts.  At the end of the Competition Noreen Jeffrey from Help for Heroes received a cheque for £518 from club President John Davenport.

Meanwhile on the bowls front BSM Ladies completed a successful season with two more victories.  This time it was wins over Upton at home and a good away win over the ladies of Teignmouth Den.  This must now put them in  a great position to clinch promotion this year.

Results (BSM Skips first) versus Upton (16/8/11):
M Davenport            26                T King                8
J Chapman              23                B Basford          11
V Pettey                 16                 G King              23
BSM                       65                Upton                42            BSM 8 points    Upton 2

Versus Teignmouth Den (BSM Skips first) 20/8/11:
E Thompson            15                S Yarham          16
V Pettey                  16                D Melhuish         9
M Davenport             24                M Tobin            16

BSM                        55                Teignmouth Den    41        BSM 8 points Teign Den 2.

One or two teams in the division still have games to complete so the final tables are eagerly awaited for the final placings to be confirmed.  Get the champagne ready girls it looks like it might be needed!!!  Here's hoping.

A busy week of league bowling saw BSM recording mixed fortunes in their matches.

The men managed to amass 14 points from their two matches in Division two of the Mid Devon League.  Four good points were gained away at promotion candidates Stoke Fleming but a good result in their last game of the season away at Kings 'B' (82 shots to 64)saw a valuable 10 points being amassed.  This gives the club a total of 123 points and should be enough for a top half finish in the Division.

Meanwhile the wheels came for BSMs team in the Over 55s league in the penultimate game of the season.  This time it was a defeat away at Victoria.  Only one point was gained in a 33 shots to 22 defeat.  As has been said before this team has done extremely well considering they only entered the competition this year.  Well done lads lets see if you can go out on a high with a result in your last game at home to Marldon.

The Riviera Mixed Triples had a disappointing result against Paignton Torbay.  Only managing to win on one rink and gaining 2 points overall (BSM 49 PTB 60 shots).  All is still not lost though as good results in the last two games should see Irene Fletcher's team with a real chance of glory in this competition.

Wednesday saw Ladies from clubs all over the area competing in the annual Eclipse Cup at BSM.  The Cup is played on a round robin basis with all teams playing three matches each.  This year the team from Paignton Torbay 'B' were the winners.

Second place went to Torbay Country Club with Victoria in third place.  Paignton Torbay will now hold the Eclipse Cup for the year.  Well done girls and well played to all who entered, better luck next year.

The annual match played between BSM and Brixham Bowls club for the Rose Bowl took place this week.

After a one year stay at BSM the Rose Bowl had to be returned with thanks for the loan.  BSM could only manage a draw on one rink and with losses on all Ladies and Gents rinks the result never seemed in doubt.  Still wait until next year!

Only two games were played in the leagues this week.  In the first the BSM Over 55s team again produced an impressive win.

This time against Country Club, winning by 35 shots to 26.  Well done again lads.  This team is really coming together as the season progresses.

Another victory BSM was recorded in the Riviera Mixed Triples away at Paignton.  With wins on two of the three rinks a handsome 8 points were gained.  The final result being 49 shots to 44.  Well done to Irene Fletcher and her crew for what looks like another successful season in this competition.

Next Sunday (14th August) sees the annual Charity Mixed Pairs take place at St Mary's.  All proceeds from this event go to the 2011 charity chosen by the Ladies and Mens Captains.  This year it is Help for Heroes.  The games are played on a round robin basis with the winners receiving the Ken Short Cup. Why not come along and support the event and help raise money for a very worthy cause.  More next week about this event.
