BRIXHAM
52 SIDMOUTH 10
Sidmouth have had a good run at the
end of their 125th anniversary season but hopes that they could
finish it off by hosting the Devon Senior Cup Final were dashed
at Astley Park. They had no answer to the pace of Brixham which
produced seven tries.
Brixham had the better
of the opening exchanges and after 15 minutes had established
a 9-3 lead thanks to three penalty goals from Ben Lovell. |

|
| Any jangling nerves Brixham might have had were
eased by the opening try. No 8 Martin Browne broke off a scrum
and brother Kyle finished the move. Lovell converted to put the
Fishermen clear. Brixham were on top but Sidmouth had chances
too. Two penalty attempts went astray before Brixham extended
the lead; a strong run by prop Mike Beeson setting up Cory Moore
for a try. Lovell added the extras. Before the break came Sidmouth
missed a penalty and a drop goal to turn around 23-3 behind. |

Sidmouth
needed to score quickly in the second period to get back into
the game - and did. A break by their No 8 was finished off with
a try under the posts; easily converted. From the restart Brixham
were straight back at them and attacking phases took them to
within 10 yards of the Sidmouth line. An overlap on the blind-side
of a ruck was well spotted by Moore and flanker Dylan Flashman
scored a try in the corner.
Brixham had a winning
margin and rang the changes in the second half to give all of
the substitutes some game-time. Sidmouth's attempts to narrow
the gap found no chinks in the home defence and before the fat
lady could sing Brixham ran in three more tries. A stolen line-out
ball and quick passing set Matt Dempsey clear for the first.
Brixham had shown against Torquay how dangerous they could be
attacking from deep positions and did so again. Two tries for
winger Tom Goodman resulted from these but he was denied his
hat-trick in the closing minutes when his touch-down was disallowed
for an offence earlier in the move.
The Final will be on
May 8 th at Astley Park against the holders, Barnstaple who
beat Exmouth in the other semi-final. |
