Withycombe U16s 5-5 Brixham U16s
A hard fought slog in the mud today as we for the first time in the Fishermen’s Cup league endured a wintry pitch and some very strong gales across the pitch. Brixham’s day got off to a poor start as they arrived for an early 10.30 kick off only to find out at no fault of our hosts that it was actually an 11.30 kick off.
Simple match report as the game went with the conditions, Brixham spent the entire first half defending into the wind and with the pitch in their oppositions favour, several forays into the other half were good but were unyielding as the conditions made it a very one-sided pitch. Withycombe battered the Brixham line and some great defence work kept them out time after time and Brix battled to clear lines and keep them at bay. Finally towards the end of the first half Withycombe used a backline to score out wide and take the lead into halftime 5-0.

The second half was almost a carbon copy but with Brixham this time on the attack with the conditions, Brixham were held up over the line on 3 occasions and were unlucky not to score when chasing down a chip forward that was adjudged to be knocked on over the line. Finally Brixham put the ball to the backline and some quick smart hands drew in the defence to allow Charlie Gurton to touch down in the corner, a kick to convert was inches short from the touchline as the kickers feet both slipped in the conditions underfoot. Brixham continued to attack for the remainder of the game but ran out of time.
Jamie Dewhirst was awarded man of the match for his hard work in the tight today and his confidence to break the defence line going forward.
Brixham will continue the Fisherman’s Cup fixtures next week at home to Devonport Services 11am at Astley Park.
