The Intercollegiate Golf Tour National Team finals were held at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club in sunny but windy conditions with a wind chill of -1 at times! Set amongst ranges of tall sand hills and smaller sand dunes the course is a true test for all golfers. The course is a magnificent test of golf especially with the sea breeze and profusion of heather and gorse combining to provide a challenging test of our students golfing abilities. Measuring 6396 yards the Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club is a true championship links course.
Our Essex and Cheshire schools had 12 students qualify for the finals. The Essex team comprised, Jacob Hassan, Adam Winter, Callum Pipe, Dominic Burgess, Giles Evans and William Farley. The Cheshire team consisted of Greg Deacon, Matt Osborn, Nathan Grant, Tom Vyce, Sam Rushton and Conor White. An extremely huge team effort, and with both schools supporting each other, LWGS-Essex finished in overall 3rd place with a 923 gross after 3 rounds, pipped at the post by Myerscough College and Balby Academy of Sport.
LWGS-Cheshire followed closely behind in 5th place with a team score of 945 gross.
In the individual competition it was all tied for the last group after 40 holes. Luke Palmowski (Balby), Adam Winter (LWGS Essex) and Mark Hyde (Myerscough ) on 2 for the tournament. After a momentous and nail biting third round Adam Winter forced a playoff against Mark Hyde, tying on 3 holes, finally clinching the individual National title on the 4th hole and earning him a world ranking place. Adam started the school off a handicap of 6 and the tournament will now see him just shy of a scratch handicap, congratulations Adam.
This was the first time of entering the event and what a brilliant performance by the Westwood boys! This week now sees us competing with a 20 strong team at the British Schools & Colleges finals in Trevose on 5th & 6th May.Follow
