From 1st May a new organisation will be running Brixham Theatre. With the support of Brixham Town Council the new organisation will manage and further develop this much-loved community asset. The new organisation has applied for charitable status and expects to know the outcome of its application by late April.
Last year the future of the Theatre was called into question when the company running the theatre terminated its lease. This news inspired members of the local community to come together and start a new organisation to take over. This new organisation includes members from Brixham Operatic And Dramatic Society, The South Devon Players, Dramatically Different, as well as past and current theatre volunteers and members of the wider community.
The new organisation started with a public meeting last November and since then has held weekly meetings, which are open to all interested parties. It is working closely with the Town Council and arts organisations from around Brixham. With advice from industry professionals it is developing business plans and ideas to take the Theatre forward both as community asset and entertainment venue.
Three shows are confirmed for May and June this year, Michael Douglas Neil Diamond Tribute, BOADS production of Hi de Hi! and The South Devon Players Production of 1307, whilst the group prepare for a Saturday September 22nd Gala Evening Show to launch a full, exciting programme of events and performance for this Autumn.
Offers of support have been received from other arts organisations to re-equip the theatre.
The new organisation is here to serve and involve the community in the future of Brixham Theatre. It will be an open and transparent organisation, it will work closely with the community and Brixham Town Council to enrich and educate the community in the arts and develop new and exciting ideas for the town.
Brixham Theatre will NOT be closing. Brixham’s wonderful Theatre is definitely open for business post May 2018 with exciting plans for the future!
