Not for profit organisation Open Hearts Open Borders are appealing for essential baby items and food donations to fill a container of aid being sent from Saltash in Cornwall to refugees in Syria.
Open Hearts Open Borders (OHOB) work in partnership with national charity One Nation who organise the transportation and distribution of aid containers on behalf of OHOB and other similar organisations in the UK and Europe.
Faraday Fearnside, from Plymouth founded OHOB in 2015 and so far, has organised for three containers full of clothes, medical supplies, baby essentials and food to be sent to Syrian refugees in desperate need. This will be the fourth OHOB container to leave the South West.
Faraday set herself and OHOB the aim of sending a container of aid every three months so that those in need in Syria can expect a regular supply. She says;
‘It’s been extremely hard work, but I feel very passionately that it’s so important we do something to help in this awful humanitarian crisis. I couldn’t watch what was happening in the news reports and not do anything to help and there are so many people like me who feel the same.
I have managed to recruit the most dedicated and wonderful team of volunteers across the South West who have organised their own collections, from businesses, schools, youth groups, you name it.
The items are collected and stored at the Quickstore in Saltash who have generously donated the space. Before it is sorted by more volunteers and packed off to Syria with lots of love.’
The next container will leave Saltash on 12 December and Faraday and her team are looking for more donations of food and baby items to send along with the clothes already collected.
‘We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by people’s generosity, particularly with the amount of children’s clothes and baby items already donated. We really want to fill the extra space in this container with much needed food and more baby items which these people are desperate of.
Items can be left at the various drop off points around the region by individuals or we’re encouraging clubs, work places, schools and nurseries to organise group collections.’
Food items need to be suitable for vegetarians and include: dried food (nuts rice, pasta, flour) UHT milk, dried fruits, instant porridge oats, tinned food (beans veg, chick peas, soup) Baby items include nappies, wipes and formula food.
