The campaign to re-open the Heathfield Line has made further progress, with Network Rail considering proposals Friday 13th October and online and paper petitions raising further public support.
Mike Cooke chairman of the Newton Abbot to Heathfield Railway Revival Group, said “On 13th October Network Rail will take our proposals on board, and decide the future of the line. They could decide to lease it for 99 years or sell.” The idea of turning the railway into a commuter and heritage route could help connect industrial estate workers and residents to Newton Abbot and Torbay. Tourist trips to Dartmoor are another possibility. Said Mike: “It could be opened for tourism with rail excursions, with its historical connections to Exeter and the moors.”
The community group’s campaign has gone from strength to strength, and has been supported by South West MEP William Dartmouth, party spokesman on Trade. A recent paper petition has now approx 2,000 signatures, and an online petition has almost reached 1,000.Follow
