Leading poverty charity Turn2us is asking people in Devon to support its No Cold Homes fuel poverty campaign. Despite 140,950 households in Devon receiving the Winter Fuel Payment to help with the energy costs last Winter, the charity says that many will cut back on heating their home this Winter because they are struggling financially. Turn2us is asking people in Devon to help raise awareness of the help that is available for those struggling to heat their homes by sharing images of themselves in woolly clothes on social media with the hashtag #ShowUsYourWoolly, alongside the campaign hashtag #NoColdHomes.
The campaign, which has received huge support on social media, is raising awareness that many energy suppliers offer support towards Winter energy bills to certain customers, such as those on low incomes, and that some energy suppliers have charitable trusts to help certain customers who are struggling with their energy bills. Research carried out by the charity found that 52% of those looking for support were unaware that such help was available.
Turn2us is running the campaign to highlight the extent to which people are struggling to keep their home warm this Winter, and to raise awareness of the support that is available. A survey of over 4,000 people who came to Turn2us for support found that it was causing many stress and worry for one in five of people, and that one in six of people were cutting back on food to pay their energy bills.
Urging people in Devon to support the campaign on social media, Kathie Clarke, who leads the vulnerable customer work at Turn2us, said:
“It is now very, very cold, which is terrible for those struggling to heat their homes. It is therefore essential that those who are worried about the cost of heating their home are made aware of the help that is available. I would ask people to support our campaign to help raise awareness and make sure that more people get the help they so desperately need.”
