At Kingsbridge Brixham had for several years seemed to be passengers in the home teams display of quality rugby, today Brixham decided those days are over verses one of the consistent sides that are and have been Devon champions and played a quality game, all be it mostly in the second half again, a feature that the Brixham coaching staff led by Gary Williams are working on.
Todays fixture saw a solid start by both teams who were sounding each other out, but it was the dangerous back line from Kingsbridge who broke the Brixham defence first putting full back Purchase over in the corner after a well worked move. Brixham struggled to get into the opponents half however defended well and without a couple of optimistic offloads could have scored to keep Kingsbridge at bay. As it went the Kings back line again moved well to increase the lead to 12-0 and drawing close to halftime again put massive pressure on Brixham’s defence, the Brixham defence stayed strong but Kings were awarded a penalty to close the half 15-0 to the home side.
HT Kingsbridge 15-0 Brixham
Brixham have this season come to life in the second half and although again winning the score line in the second period it was not enough to win the fixture. Brixham’s revitalized half was started from the kick off when from their own 22 the set up a series of phases through combinations of backs and forwards to bring them into Kingsbridge’s territory, Harry Davies returning from injury powered over the line out wide to bring Brixham onto the board, Brad McKee just shaved the far post from out wide but Brixham were starting to dictate the game. Against the play Kingsbridge came back and scored a try under the posts to move into what seemed to be a comfortable lead of 22-5.
This is the point at which we can see the development over the years and the change in Brixham’s attitude and play on the pitch, Brixham once again played through the strength of the forwards who dominated at the scrum and breakdowns to again score as Davies hit the base of the post to register his second, McKee converted to close the score to 22-12. Time running down and Brixham were on the offensive again, this time forward rumbles and a powerful run with stunning determination from prop Jamie Dewhirst released fellow front row union member Dylan Griffiths to finish out wide, McKee slotted home from the touchline to close within 3 points with only a minute remaining 22-19.
From the restart Brixham pushed the ball wide and a great break from centre Will Passmore who was flying up the wing was brought back as he put a foot into touch, from the resulting line out Kingsbridge came back to life and put impressive full back Purchase over the line to bring the game to a close.
Brixham happy with today’s performance however will work on the first half performance; again they won a convincing second half but ran out of time.
