The recent images and reports of the refugee crisis sent a shockwave of horror and heartbreak that has brought many of us together to help the refugees in every way we can. Humanity Has No Borders are a group of people from throughout Torbay and the South West who put out a call for clothing, toiletries, and practical items such as tents and sleeping bags to help the refugees.
Kirsty Holland, co-founder and group treasurer says “The response has been heartwarming, with many kind donations of items coming in from across the community. Businesses are also coming forward, as well as churches and clubs, to help in all sorts of ways. An amazing demonstration of compassion and community spirit.”
While mainstream news coverage of the refugees has become less and less, the crisis continues. It is in fact getting worse, the need for aid increasingly urgent.
“A desperate plea for help has come from Lesvos and surrounding Greek Islands, which is where we are focusing our efforts. Thousands of refugees are arriving by boat every day and the numbers are increasing. Refugees are still crossing the Mediterranean in dangerously overloaded boats through gale force storms. Men, women, children and babies are arriving malnourished, exhausted and suffering from hypothermia. This is on top of the many thousands that are already there, suffering the same; stuck outside, exposed to the cold and rain. There are children sleeping in bin bags, babies drenched in the blankets they are wrapped in; they are on the streets and have nothing. Volunteers on Lesvos Island are reporting that many are hours from death.”
“Of the thousands of refugees on Lesvos, approximately half are children and babies. There aren’t enough dry clothes, or shelter, sleeping bags or basic food and water provision. As a parent, I cannot begin to imagine the despair those parents must be experiencing. This crisis will not be over for a long time yet”.
“We recognize the growing refugee crisis will require a long term strategy and are committed to securing long term provision, aid and support. We have ongoing fundraising events and other group activities taking place”.
