The GRA has been asked by the Friends of Galmpton Warborough Common to distribute their following appeal.
The GRA Committee appreciates the serious concerns that the Friends of Galmpton Warborough Common have about unauthorised encampments, however the GRA Committee also wants residents to know that there are other important aspects of the common relating to its ecology, heritage and leisure value which need to be addressed. Should any resident have an interest an in any of these areas, we encourage you to engage with the Friends of Galmpton Warborough Common. Please also feel free to share any concerns with the GRA.
“Friends of the Common” : Urgent Appeal
As you may be aware the “Friends of the Common” group was set up to assist with the management, maintenance and protection of Warborough Common in Galmpton/Churston. This includes all parts of the Common along Bascombe Road, Langdon Lane and Dartmouth Road.
One of the key short term priorities is protection of the boundaries to prevent unauthorised encampments. These short term protection measures include the addition of boulders around the periphery and a gate at Slade Lane – both of which were presented at community meetings in February 2015, and both considered temporary until longer term plans are developed.
Despite reinforcement efforts since 2015, this summer’s incursion indicates that more needs to be done to reinforce weak spots on the boundary with appropriate size boulders. In addition, other efforts such as increased signage, clean up of litter around the edges and management of the copses will all contribute to maintaining the natural environment.
We need more people to participate in the Friend’s Group, and additional funds for urgent needs and for longer term projects. We are appealing to local residents to join us and assist us. Thanks to those of you who already are active on the group and/or who have already donated.
