Don the dolphin has arrived at Shoalstone seawater pool courtesy of Brixham resident Maggie Duffy, her daughter Sara Green and friend Chris Thomas, aided by Brixham theatre volunteer Chris Jones.
Maggie had been musing for a while that Shoalstone needed some sort of mascot as a friendly reminder to users of the pool that donations are essential for the upkeep of this unique facility.
Enquiries locally led to Maggie visiting the Jolly Roger life-size model company in Bovey Tracey, where she does admit to nearly purchasing a fifteen foot high dinosaur for her garden. Hpwever common sense prevailed (it would not fit in the car…)
Maggie, Sara and Chris Thomas pooled their cash and Don was ferried back to Brixham, where Chris Jones took on the challenge of making a stable base on which he can permanently reside.
Both Maggie Duffy and Chris Thomas are well-known local singer/songwriters. Maggie’s family roots are well established in the town. She learned to swim at Shoalstone, as did her two daughters. Sara now lives in Maidenhead in Berkshire but every visit home in the summer months includes daily visits to Shoalstone as a priority, and Maggie swims there for much of the year.
Maggie is passionate about Shoalstone and said “Brixham has to work hard to keep Shoalstone Pool open. We must never lose this amazing and safe little gem.”
Sophie Walker-Haworth, Chair of Shoalstone Pool Limited, has also been involved, taking on the task of choosing an appropriate name for the new arrival. She eventually settled on Don – as he is politely asking you to DONate towards this most worthy cause.
Sophie said “We are doing everything we can to preserve Shoalstone Pool for our community, both visitors and locals alike. We are extremely grateful for Maggie’s efforts, and hope that this wonderful new addition to the team will help us to raise the money we need to keep our work going and take Shoalstone Pool from strength to strength.”Follow
