On 28th March Brixham Gig Club took part in the Bristol City Sprints Regatta at Bristol Marina.
On a wet and windy day that made for a very difficult last 500 meters of the 1500 meter course made for some very entertaining racing at close quarters in 2 up sprints.
The first race for Brixham was the Mens Veterans Qualifier race of Brixham vs Bristol with the crew of Lance Worthington, Dave Morralley, Tim Colliver, Ian MacClean, Pete Scoble and Kevin Thomas coxed by Amy Plowman winning the qualifier by 36 seconds and qualifying for the final as the fastest boat.
The second race was the Mens Qualifier of again Brixham vs Bristol with Bristol getting revenge for the earlier veterans race edging the crew of Karl Oakley, Ben Trayhorn, Matt Scoble, John Puckey, Steven Marshall, Mark Ashworth coxed by Kevin Thomas out of the final by 2 seconds sending Brixham into a 5 way row off for 3rd place.
Next race was the Ladies Veterans crew of Beverly Worthington, Caroline Dadley, Amy Plowman, Jo Hayden, Karen Marshall and Julie Knight coxed by Lance Worthington who took on Bridport who beat the Brixham crew by 10 seconds but the time was enough to set up a repeat of this race as the final later in the day.
The last qualifier race was the Ladies crew of Gemma Dadley, Mary Currie, Fiona Slater, Andra Colliver, Emma Trayhorn, Eve Buckley coxed by Dave Morralley who raced Swanage but lost out by 18 seconds but did make the 3 way row off for 3rd place after dead heating on time with the 4th fastest crew.
In the first final row off the weather had worsened making the experience of rowing on the sea in bad weather the advantage of Brixham and so the Ladies crew took on Barnstaple in the 3rd place row off winning that race by a distance after the dead heat earlier in the day to take 3rd. The ladies were followed by the men who also took on Barnstaple as well as Bristol B, Weymouth and Bristol C and came out on top also taking 3rd place and beating their head to head opposition of Barnstaple by 50 seconds.
Onto the Veterans finals the Ladies had a head to head for 1st place with their earlier opposition of Bridport and despite being very close at halfway the Dorset club proved too much for them and just edged out a length lead at the finish.
The Mens Veterans also drew Bridport in the final row off for 1st place but this proved to be a reverse of the earlier final with Brixham running out winners by a distance pulling away more when they hit the headwind on the home straight.
Brixham Gig Club would like to invite everybody to our boat launch on the 2nd of April at Oxen Cove, Brixham as we bless and launch our brand new racing gig.Follow
