Brixham will be disappointed with today’s performance as they have played such great rugby in recent weeks, today was a performance that had plenty of passion and effort but was just missing the finishing touches of recent results.
Torquay started strongly and Brixham playing up the slope were under pressure for the first 15m, Torquay eventually crossed to take the lead with a unconverted try. Brixham started to come back into the half with some forward attacks but a heavy penalty count against them allowed Torquay easy defence. Torquay were dominant in the half and were only kept out by some resolute defence from Brixham, as the half came to a close Brixham had a penalty chance from out wide, with the last kick of the half Brad McKee pulled just wide from distance to close the first session.
HT Brixham 0-5 Torquay
Brixham started the second half in better fashion and started to take the game to Torquay, using the slope they were playing a more expansive game. Scott Hedges was to spark them into life as he finished off a move and put Brixham on the scoreboard, McKee converted for Brixham to take the lead 7-5. Brixham were again to score next as Prop Callum Bryson saw a gap and took his chance to sprint uncontested for the line and another McKee conversion took Brixham into a 14-5 lead.
Brixham looked like they had finally found their stride but it was Torquay who used the forwards well who scored the next two tries, both from close in after a series of penalty awards to grab back the lead at 14-15. With 10 minutes remaining it could have been anyone’s game, Brixham put the pressure back on and with 8m remaining they tried a kick at the posts again from out wide, McKee was just wide but the ball was chased up by the backline who challenged in the goal area, it was adjudged to have been touched down by the defence.
The remainder of the game was end to end, but it was Torquay who came out as winners and will progress to the quarter finals of the plate.
Well played both sides on an entertaining fixture.
