The recent good numbers at Brixham paid dividend today as they were without five of the normal starting squad, some injured others unavailable or on the road to recovery, the fact they played the same quality of rugby was a massive positive today. Withycombe have always been strong opponents as the Cup victory they had over Brixham a few weeks ago showed, today was to be Brixham’s day but both sides put up resolute defence and a quick pace game was underway.
Both sides started brightly and as they discovered each others game plan a break for Withycombe came with a well taken interception in the centre who finished well under pressure under the posts, the kick however was just wide and the strong wind flowing down the pitch was starting to play a part in the game. Both sides battled well and both came close to further scores however each attack was thwarted by the opponents strong defence, Withycombe kicked from hand well and used the pitch and the wind to gain great territory, Brixham defended well and went close themselves but the defence was strong enough to keep Brixham out before the break to leave Withycombe leading 5-0 at half-time.
Brixham now playing with the pitch and the wind began to pressure again and it was not long until powerhouse winger Will Passmore crossed the line with players hanging off him, a great outstretched arm was to gain the last bit of pitch required, although out wide the score brought Brixham level, Brad McKee used the wind well to curl a kick over the posts for Brixham to lead 7-5.
Back came the determined Withycombe side and a stunning step from the fly-half cut the Brixham defence for the first time and he completed the touchdown for a deserved solo effort, although unconverted the lead was back with the visitors. Brixham now turned up a few gears and the forwards were controlling the breakdown with good ball retention from securing breakdowns , they started to play a more expansive game, McKee went within inches after a line break and run from 40m out only to be caught just short, next Joss Greenway with a trademark power drive for the line was adjudged to be held up. Brixham were pressing for a comeback and when hooker Harry Davies drove his way through the defence and grounded the ball out wide for a well deserved score Brixham were back in the lead, McKee had a kick from the touchline that glanced off the upright in the wrong direction to leave the score at 12-10 to Brixham with 10m to play.
The last phases of the game were played with all from both sides , McKee tried a drop goal from way out that was good on distance but just off direction , Withycombe pressed hard but each time they threatened the home line Brixham defended and McKee kicked them back into their own 22.With 5m remaining Brixham opted for the posts from a penalty and McKee slotted home from the 22 to take Brixham into a five point lead.
The final phases were played out in the Brixham half with several penalties awarded to the visitors , Brixham defended well and finally turned over Withycombe to gain a great victory in a good quality game from both sides.
Brixham continue with a great winning run to bring them to 5 games undefeated and 4 wins in a row.
