On the 6th August Brixham Gig club hosted their 3rd annual gig regatta at Breakwater beach. The day was attended by a record number of clubs with 15 boats in attendance.
The first race of the day was the ladies B race with Brixham sending out 2 crews. The crew of Kathryn Ashworth, Becca Chappel, Gemma Dadley, Sasha Perkes, Lizzie Payne and Charlotte Summersby rowed Henry Smardon to 10th place, meanwhile the crew of Emma Trayhorn, Eve Buckley, Fiona Slater, Kate Everill, Val McClean, Caroline Dadley rowed Pegasus to 4th.
Next up was the ladies C with Brixham sending out 2 crews again with Gemma Dadley, Lucy Blackler, Jane Brooke, Racheal Atterbury, Barbara Young and Tracy Stoneman rowing Pegasus to 7th place, Henry Smardon was rowed by Hillary Kennedy, Deb Hudson, Sapphire Hendrikson, Andrea Rendell, Jaqui Shaw, Jo Noden to a 9th place finish. The two Brixham boats were split by a barbarians crew of 2 women from Exemouth and Cattewater joining Jodie Ellis and Becca Chappel of Brixham for an 8th place. The race was won by the crew from Portland who borrowed Andi Colliver of Brixham.
The Ladies A followed with the Brixham crew of Steph Blackler, Mary Currie, Leigh Bower, Sarah David, Jennie Everill, Sue Putt who finished 4th.
After the Ladies races it was the turn of the future of the sport with the under 16s taking to the water next the Pegasus crew of Bess, Mitzi, Joe, Harry, Anna and Lizzie rowed themselves into 3rd place narrowly behind Teignmouth and Rame whilst Jasmine, Lauren, Katie, Ellie and 2 Teignmouth rowers brought Henry Smardon round in 6th place.
The racers got even younger next with the under 14s crews on a straight sprint course that saw 2 Brixham crews race, the Henry Smardon crew of Ellie, Emily, Gracie, Macy, Ted and Livvie rowed home 4th whilst the Pegasus crew of Jasmine, Anna, Harry, Lauren, Katie and Joss started what was to be a flurry of wins by taking victory in a well contested race.
The juniors were followed by the mens races with the B crews up first. Brixhams men were not to be out shone by their junior counterparts and so the crew of Craig Thomas, Ben Trayhorn, Tim Colliver, Chris Mason, Kevin Thomas and Steven Marshall took and outstanding victory winning by some margin ahead of 2nd place.
The mens C almost saw another victory with the Pegasus crew of Alec Slater, Dan Everill, Steve Green, Andy Blackler, Joe Nisbett and Bruce Nisbett coming in 2nd whilst the Henry Smardon crew of Pete Dadley, Stephen Colbrooke, Darren Atterbury, Max Beer, Bob Moulden and Jim finished 6th.
Brixham did not have to wait long for the 3rd victory of the day however having seen the B crew win the mens A crew of Karl Oakley, Ash Turner, Stevie Reece, James Agates, Matt Scoble and Simon Mitchell knew that without victory they would not hear the end of it from their B crew counterparts and so they duly delivered taking a very close win over Cattewater in a thrilling race.
After the men it was the turn of the ladies veterans with Brixham again mustering 2 crews. The Henry Smardon crew of Kathryn Ashworth, Lin McRae, Sacha Adamson, Andi Colliver, Jodie Ellis and Deb Hudson finished in 11th place whilst the crew in Pegasus of Beverly Worthington, Justine Pilkington, Karen Marshall, Sarah Tingle, Amy Plowman and Sarah David stole 2nd place from Salcombe with the very last stroke of the race.
There was also a 7th place for Barbara Young who rowed in for Paignton.
Then followed the mens Vets with Brixham men again faced with the concept of ridicule from the A and B crews should they fail to win the crew of Lance Worthington, Dave Morralley, Tim Colliver, Mac McClean, Pete Scoble and Mark Ashworth put in their performance of the season to take the 4th victory of the day for the home club.
The mixed race ended the racing with the crew of Steph Blackler, Ash Turner, Karl Oakley, Simon Mitchell, Fiona Slater and Becca Chappel rowing to 3rd place in Henry Smardon whilst the crew of Emma Trayhorn, Bev Worthington, Matt Scoble, James Agates, Stevie Reece and Kate Everill rowed Pegasus to 2nd.
These results meant that Brixham won the overall championship of the day 28 points from Teignmouth who were a further 20 points ahead of 3rd placed Bridport.
