On the 21st August Brixham Gig Club juniors attended the national under 14 junior rowing championships held at Hayle.
The crew of Jasmine Mills, Lauren Winter, Harry Davies, Joss Greenway, Anna Nisbett and Ellie Goodman rowed in the main championship crew with reserves Livvie Greenway and Katie Trayhorn rowing with a composite crew from Mounts Bay. The championship crew was coxed by Amy Plowman.
In the first round the crew eased through beating Coverack and Cadgwith by approximately 40 and 50 seconds respectively.
This qualified them for the quarter finals where they again eased through beating the other Coverack crew by 7 seconds and the hosts Hayle by 35 seconds sending the crew into the semifinal.
Meanwhile Livvie and Katie with Mounts Bay also won their heat by nearly half a minute but because they were a composite crew they could not progress to round two so headed to the plate semi final where they would have qualified for the final however being a composite again they could not progress.
The championship semi final proved a bit more difficult but qualification to the final was assured where Brixham would face their Devonshire compatriots Ilfracombe and Cornish giants Caradon.
There was however some bad news with Harry Davies suffering an injury before the final so Katie Trayhorn took his place in the final.
The final was a close fought affair with Ilfracombe taking victory ahead of Caradon and Brixham. This did however mean that the Brixham crew finished 3rd overall to claim the bronze medals.
Lauren Winter number 5 rower said “It was a long and hard day with a few tears and injuries! but it was all worth it in the end! Amazing experience with fantastic crews. We were all extremely pleased with where we came, a huge improvement on last year! We’ve worked hard as a team all season and I think that showed off at the championships! Well done all!”
Ellie Goodman who rowed in the bow said “It made me very happy to see us all getting so far in such a big event”
Coach Amy Plowman said “Incredible Row for the crew in the semi to get us in the final, couldn’t believe we’d done it”
Meanwhile the parents who assisted Amy on the day had this to say:
“It was unbelievable. So proud! Amy and the kids were legends.” – Sarah Goodman Sproston
“Everything that a sport should be… a sterling effort and an amazing result, privileged to be there” – Bruce Nisbett
The whole club is very proud of our junior rowers and their results are a testament to the efforts of the rowers in their training and Amy Plowman and her coaching team.Follow
