Brixham Gig Club held their annual gig regatta on the Breakwater beach on Saturday 22nd August. Despite the low turnout due to visiting clubs cancelling at the last minute the event was very successful with crews from Cattewatter, Dartmouth, Salcombe, Teignmouth and Paignton attending.
This year saw a slight change to the course from last year with a longer first leg but this made for the last 700 meters finishing along the Breakwater.
The first race of the day was the Ladies B race in which Teignmouth took the win with the two Brixham crews of Bev Worhington, Jo Haydon, Amy Plowman, Caroline Dadley, Karen Marshall, Julie Knight cox Lance Worthington finishing 5th and the other crew Gemma Dadley, Eve Buckley, Fiona Slater, Mary Currie, Emma Trayhorn, Kate Everill cox Dave Morralley behind them in 6th.
Next was the Ladies C race which was also won in emphatic style by Teignmouth with again 2 Brixham crews taking part with the crew of Val McClean, Sasha Perkes, Kelly Green, Jodie Ellis, Sarah Reece, Tracey Stoneman cox Tim Colliver finishing in 4th ahead of the crew of Annick Hammersley, Deb Hudson, Rachel Atterbury, Andrea Rendell, Linda McRae, Barbara Young cox Mac McClean In 5th place. This race saw Rachel Atterbury make her debut row.
The 3rd race of the day was the Ladies A race which brought an end to the run of Teignmouth wins with Salcombe running out ahead right off the start. The Brixham crew of Amy Plowman, Sarah David, Leigh Bower, Sue Putt, Jennie Everill, Justine Pilkington cox Pete Scoble finished in 4th.
Then followed the under 16s race where the Brixham crew of Bess, Brogan, Adam, Max Beer, Lizzie, Lucy cox Amy Plowman just edged victory by a matter of less than a meter from the Teignmouth crew.
This was then followed by the under 14s race unfortunately from a spectators point of view there were only 2 boats in this race but as both from Brixham all 12 rowers made sure to put all the effort they could into the shorter course but come the end the more experienced crew of Jasmine, Ellie G, Joe, Lauren, Katie T, Ellie J cox Amy Plowman rowed well to finish in front of the crew of Bess, Brogan, Harry, Lizzie, Katie, Macey cox Pete Scoble of whom Katie and Macey made their debut rows.
After the Juniors had finished it was onto the men with the B crews up first this saw the crew from Brixham who have recently topped the league in Tribute Series final standings in a tight race with the crew from Cattewatter but the Brixham crew of Craig Thomas, Ben Trayhorn, Karl Oakley, Chris Mason, Kevin Thomas, Steven Marshall cox Lance Worthington won by lengths in the final section of the race despite some controversy on the first buoy turn but as always with gig racing it was all forgiven back on the beach.
This was followed by the fourth win on the trot for Brixham in the men C race with the crew of Craig Thomas, Kev Hallam, Adam Croughan, Karl Oakley, Steve Green, Max Beer cox Steven Marshall -of whom Kev Hallam and Steve Green made their racing debuts while Max Beer made his senior debut- finishing ahead of Salcombe who split the two Brixham crews with the crew of Alec Slater, Tim Jones, Andy Blackler, Kev Thomas, Bob Moulden, Simon Beer cox Tim Colliver finishing third with Simon Beer and Tim Jones making their debut also.
The Mens A race saw a hard fought race in the field but nobody could get close to the Dartmouth crew who won by a distance from the field with the Brixham boat of Mark Harvey, Ash Turner, Stevie Reece, James Agates, Matt Scoble, Simon Mitchell cox Dave Morralley finishing 4th.
The Ladies Vets race followed the men with Teignmouth Ladies adding a 3rd win to their collection for the day. The 2 Brixham crews finished line astern in this race with the crew of Kathryn Ashworth, Terressa Mikalauskas, Sasha Adamson, Andi Colliver, Val McClean, Caroline Hall cox Kev Thomas finishing in 4th ahead of the crew of Bev Worhington, Jo Haydon, Leigh Bower, Caroline Dadley, Karen Marshall, Julie Knight cox Steven Marshall who came in 5th.
The Mens Vets race naturally followed during the only break in the good weather with the same Dartmouth crew who won the A race rowing out winners again in the Veterans race ahead of the Brixham crew of Lance Worthington, Dave Morralley, Tim Colliver, Mac McClean, Pete Scoble, Mark Ashworth cox Amy Plowman in 2nd.
The final race of the day was the mixed race with 2 Brixham crews again finishing one after the other this time in 3rd and 4th as Salcombe won the race.
