Brixham Gig Club launched their new wooden racing Cornish Pilot Gig on Thursday 2nd April 2015 in a blessing ceremony at Oxen Cove in Brixham attended by club members and other interested parties alike.
The gig – built by Brian Pomeroy of Dartmouth – was named by Tim Colliver and blessed as Pegasus in the ceremony before being first launched by Bob Moulden and then rowed by a crew of Pete Scoble part of the coaching team as cox, Karen Marshall founder member and vice captain, Dave Morralley founder member and captain, Amy Plowman head of junior rowing, Caroline Dadley club secretary, Steven Marshall founder member, Julie Knight founder member and Treasurer and Katy Trayhorn youngest rower as the pilot.
Before the launch a speech was given by club captain Dave Morralley thanking everyone for attending and gave thanks to all of the contributors: Aqua Gas Torbay and Vehicle Maintenance and Servicing of Paignton, South Hams Roofing and Piccolo Pizza. As well as funds from Sport England and the Brixham Trawler Race Association.
After the official first row other members of the club took the boat for a spin around the harbour before the Mens A crew took her out to put her through her paces with some racing starts and sprints while the other members tucked into the food and drink kindly donated by members as well as pizza provided for free by Piccolo Pizza of Brixham.
The club will now embark on the racing season including the World Championships on the Isles of Scilly on the May Bank Holiday Weekend. As always the club would like to invite any potential sponsors to contact us as we now have the option for you to sponsor a crew.Follow
