On Saturday 5th of March Brixham gig club competed at the grueling 3 rivers race at Saltash in Cornwall. The race is the season opener and widely regarded as one of the most difficult races on the calender with 80 crews tackling an approximate 6 mile course on the Tamar.
This years event was made even more challenging by strong winds and fast tides as well as rain and cold to make a difficult race even more arduous.
First to tackle the formidable race was the ladies crews. Brixham had two entries in this race who were both seeded in heat 3. The A Crew of Amy Plowman, Eve Buckley, Emma Trayhorn, Leigh Bower, Karen Marshall and Bess Ashworth cox Dave Morralley finished in 41st place in 1 hour 4 minutes exactly. The B crew of Kathryn Ashworth, Jodie Ellis, Caroline Dadley, Valerie MacClean, Andi Colliver and Justine Pilkington coxed by Pete Scoble got off to a bad start being slightly behind at the start rallied to finish 6 places and 1 minute 28 seconds behind the A boat coming home 47th in 1 hour 5 minutes 28 seconds.
Next up where the men’s crews with the A crew of Matt Scoble, Ashley Turner, Stevie Reece, James Agates, Steven Marshall, Chris Mason and cox Karen Marshall seeded in heat 2 where the only Brixham crew to duck in under the hour mark at 55 minutes 14 seconds for a finish of 26th place. The B crew slot was taken by the men’s vets crew of Mark Ashworth, Dave Morralley, Tim Colliver, Mac MacClean, Pete Scoble and Bruce Nisbet coxed by Amy Plowman completed the course in 1 hour 1 minute and 30 seconds for a overall finish of 62nd place.
The next race will see crews travel to Bristol later this month for some sprint races before the first conventional regatta at Dartmouth on the 8th April.Follow
