Wildflower Meadow at St Mary's Park

Wild flowers

Once the putting green at St Mary's Park was well used but in recent years the usage went into decline and we were left with a sorry looking corner of the park with uneven grass. It had been agreed for some time that the putting area should be re-graded and a Wildflower Area had been on our groups wish list for several years. In January of this year we were contacted by Lindsay Weaver who is the Parks Development Officer to say that Torbay Council would be prepared to convert the area .
A design was drawn up to include grass pathways leading around and up to the seat to enable people to be amongst the flowers and wildlife.
The grass needed to be weakened to reduce it's strength and the ability to compete with the wildflower seeds. The selection of seeds contained Annuals such as Poppy, Cosmos, Cosmodium,Aquleigia, Gypsphilia and Chrysanthemums.

After the new seeds were sown we had a wait of about two months then in early June the area started to explode with seedlings and we could see the shape of the Meadow emerge.

This is truly a magical place best viewed from the top of the slope looking down and out over the fantastic sea of colour swaying gently in the breeze, which we hope will be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come.
