PARENTS USE THEIR SKILLS FOR CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Eight parents came to a course at the new Paignton library designed to utilise their skills in the workplace. The three hour taster was funded by Learn Devon to encourage people to consider going onto further training or study in order to get into employment.

Tutor, Gail Tucker, enabled participants to look at the range of job opportunities within the childcare sector such as nurseries, play schemes, after school clubs, youth clubs, and crèches. The morning covered the qualifications required for each area of work, the law and policies associated with it.

Linda Holmes said “It was a very interesting morning with a relaxed atmosphere. We were encouraged to participate and got good feedback to our questions.”

Donna Lidster said “It helped knowing what to do next and helped me see that I would like to work with children with special needs.”

Jenny Harriman the Head of Brixham Adult & Community Learning Centre joined the group to give them details of further study at South Devon College where they can gain a CACHE qualification ‘Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce - level 2 or level 3'.

All present were keen to go to South Devon College's open evening on Thursday January 27th from 5-8pm where they will meet the tutors and get full details of the course plus be able to sign up for next year.
