Official
opening of the new Brixham Fish Quay with the Princess Royal
Her Royal Highness,
The Princess Royal, officially opened the new Brixham Fish Quay
on Tuesday 29th March.
Arriving at 7.30am
The Princess Royal met local dignitaries at the entrance to
the new fish quay. |
|
This included The High Sheriff of Devon, The Hon S V Lopes,
Mayor Nick Bye, Chairman of Brixham Council Martyn Hodges with
his wife Dee, and Tor Bay Harbour Master, Paul Labistour, who
guided the Princess Royal on a tour of the new facilities. On
the landing quay Her Royal Highness also met local boat owners
and saw the fish auction in action in the new fish market, then
watched a filleting demonstration, before moving on to view a
new piece of public art work. |
 |
The development started on site in 2007 and comprises a new
fish market, extended quay space, new offices, a fish processing
unit, fish retail units and a first floor restaurant facility
with unrivalled views of the unique marine vista of Torbay stretching
from Berry Head to Hope's Nose. |
 |
The £20 million award-winning project is a partnership
between Torbay Council, Torbay Development Agency, community regeneration
group Brixham 21 and Tor Bay Harbour Authority. The project was
funded by South West Regional Development Agency; European Regional
Development Fund; Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance
and Torbay Council. |
 |
Steve Parrock, Torbay Development Agency Chief Executive said:
“I am delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal
to Brixham, to officially open this fantastic new facility, which
will help put this picturesque working harbour at its rightful
place on the national stage. The new fish quay is the centre point
of Brixham's regeneration; helping to create the renaissance of
the town as a destination of choice to live, work, visit and invest
in.” |
The historic port of
Brixham is benefiting from this major regeneration project aiming
to enhance the local economy, which remains heavily focused
on the fishing industry. In contrast to other areas, the Brixham
fishery is largely sustainable and therefore has thrived in
recent years resulting in the highest value catch in England
and a world class reputation for quality. Fish landed at Brixham
finds its way to local eateries, London restaurants and to the
plates of consumers across Europe.
The Princess Royal
met employers and employees of the Brixham fishing operation
and members of the local community whilst touring the site,
and formally opened the new fish quay by unveiling of a plaque
at the front entrance of the new building.
Jon Andrewes, Chairman
of Brixham 21, said: “The opening by The Princess Royal marks
a celebration of Brixham's fishing industry which is integral
to the town's heritage and economy. This new regeneration project
will help us secure Brixham's future as vibrant fishing town
that will benefit from new investment and jobs.” |
