Heartfelt
thanks for Torbay RNLI from cruise liner Captain
The Captain of a P
& O cruise liner has sent a message of thanks to the volunteer
crew of the Torbay RNLI lifeboat following the evacuation of
a sick passenger on Monday 19th September. Neil Turnball praises
the swift and efficient response of the emergency services when
the person needed to be urgently transferred ashore. |

The Torbay
lifeboat crew were called from their beds just before 1am on
Monday morning when the decision was made to evacuate the sick
passenger and her family from the cruise ship Aurora .
The vessel was on
passage from Southampton to New York and altered course to meet
the lifeboat five miles south of Berry Head. |

Once on scene at
2am, the volunteer crew onboard the Torbay all-weather lifeboat
Alec & Christina Dykes went alongside the cruise
liner so they and the liner's staff, could prepare the casualty
and family to transfer ashore.
With volunteer 2nd Coxswain Richard
Fowler in charge, the people were safely onboard within half
an hour and were then taken to Torquay Harbour for an onward
journey to Torbay Hospital.
In an email send to the lifeboat
station, Aurora 's Captain, Neil Turnball says: |
‘Our thanks go to the
Torbay lifeboat station and crew and Brixham coastguard, as
well as the attending paramedic, for their swift and efficient
response in facilitating the transfer at such short notice and
in not ideal weather conditions. As always, it was a pleasure
working with them to affect an efficient transfer.
‘We will continue
to make our established donations as a ship and a company to
the RNLI for the splendid job they do in supporting and saving
lives at sea.'
Stuart Elliman, RNLI
volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager at Torbay , says the crew
are delighted with the thanks;
‘It's not often we
receive such a quick thank you for the work of our volunteers
and it really does make a huge difference to us all to know
our early morning launch was appreciated by the cruise ship
Captain. As a charity we rely on both our volunteer crew and
the generous donations people make so we're also delighted to
know P & O Cruises will continue to donate to our lifesaving
cause.'
It's understood the
casualty is now comfortable and receiving appropriate care.
