HAVE YOUR WORK DISPLAYED ALONGSIDE ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS ARTISTS

TACO 3D & Art on the English Riviera

TAMED

Contemporary Art Exhibition

July-September 2010

South West artists are being given the opportunity to have their artwork displayed alongside one of the most famous artists in the world. Damien Hirst's Mother and Child, Divided will be on view in the Spanish Barn at Torre Abbey throughout July and August.

Torre Abbey

Regional artists are being encouraged to submit pieces for the Torre Abbey Contemporary Open exhibition, which will be running simultaneously in Torre Abbey.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for exceptional artists working in 3 dimensions to exhibit at Torre Abbey in Torquay as part of our Torre Abbey Contemporary Open (TACO) exhibition. Priority will be given to South West artists, but national and international artists may also apply. Please note we are only looking for sculptural or mixed media 3D pieces this year.

Is this part of a creative vision for Torre Abbey?

We launched our first Contemporary Open Exhibition in 2008 with Blank Canvas, which last year we renamed Torre Abbey Contemporary Open (TACO). Our aim is for Torre Abbey and, indeed, the English Riviera to become one of the most important cultural destinations in the South West.

TACO 3D will this year be part of a much bigger exhibition: Art on the English Riviera, a major Contemporary Art Exhibition in the Spanish Barn and in Torre Abbey itself. This has been given life by last year's spectacularly successful exhibition, Antony Gormley's Field for the British Isles in the Spanish Barn, which was seen by over 38,000 people.

For this year, we have secured the loan of Damien Hirst's Mother and Child, Divided from the Tate and we are currently negotiating the loan of some major pieces from the Arts Council Collection to accompany this iconic piece. This heralds a new era for Torbay in which relationships with international, national and local artists will make for exciting times on the English Riviera.

Is there a theme for TACO 3D?

The theme for Art on the English Riviera is Tamed. You may interpret this in any way that you see fit, but you will be encouraged to provide a title for your work and a rationale. We would prefer a new piece of work, but you may enter an existing piece. We are also using the word tamed as an acronym; these ideas may also be used as a guide by you.

T amed: The new blockbuster exhibition at Torre Abbey this summer showcases contemporary pieces of work by major living artists, of international, national and South West repute.

A rt: The debate rages on about what constitutes art, about whether art is even important. This is a debate that we have been engaged in since time began. This exhibition, we hope, will both entertain and enlighten .

M oney: Damien Hirst is now one of the wealthiest artists in the world. He sells his work to private buyers but he also donates his work. Mother and Child, Divided (Exhibition Copy) was donated to the Tate in 2007. The other works are on loan from the Arts Council Collection. This means that we can afford to exhibit world-class art here in Devon.

TACO 3D is not about fees or money, but about opening up exhibition opportunities to South West artists, allowing them to exhibit with art that is considered to be of universal interest.

E nvironment: This is a major part of this exhibition's drive and focus. This exhibition looks at how human beings attempt to tame nature and the environment, and how artists interpret this. This exhibition aims to open up the debate right here in Devon, using art to energise the debate.

Di vided : This strand of the theme is taken from the nature and the title of the Hirst piece, but it is deeper than that. The decision to loan this piece has divided those of us working on the project: some passionately ‘for' or passionately ‘against'. This is the case also with the media and the public alike. We want to engage explicitly with this.
