FOOTBALL WORLD CUP COMES TO THE ENGLISH RIVIERA

We are very excited to announce that the Copa Riviera, a junior World Cup Football Tournament, will be held across the English Riviera and the South Hams during July 2010. The tournament will welcome an incredible 32 boys' teams playing under 12, under 14 and under 16 matches and representing international teams, Premiership Academies and South Devon football clubs and local colleges.

There will be teams from Barbados, Panama, Mexico, USA, Sweden and Belgium, as well as Academy teams from Chelsea, Derby, Crystal Palace and Reading.

The teams will use pitches across the Bay and in Stoke Gabriel for their training sessions and matches, while South Devon College will be providing their breakfast and evening meals.

Win, lose or draw, every player will have an unforgettable experience at the presentation evening, receiving an award from a famous football celebrity. A fantastic trophy will be presented to the winning team in each age group and further awards will be given for sportsmanship.

The English Riviera Tourist Board are working closely with the organisers of this exciting new event and would like to hear from any accommodation providers who may be able to put up a team for their six night stay. We realise that this is a very busy time of the year, but the tournament needs to be held in a holiday period when pitches are available and players are on school holidays.

Each team is made up of 20 people – 15 playing members and five adult officials - and will be looking for very reasonably-priced accommodation, on a room-only basis, from Saturday 24th July 2010 for six nights. It should be noted that these are highly dedicated young players representing some of the world's top clubs who are looking for a future professional career in football.

If you are interested in offering accommodation for one or more teams, please kindly contact Stephen Pearce or one of our Call Centre staff on 01803 211211. It is likely that the families of many of the players will also be travelling down to enjoy the matches and our dedicated Call Centre staff will also be dealing with these enquires.

On the Thursday (29th July) the players have a free day and organisers are looking for local attractions and sports facilities to offer discounts which can be included in their activity programme. If this is something you would like to offer the players, please email details of your offer to stephen.pearce@torbay.gov.uk

Dave Weeks, Sports Coordinator for the Copa Riviera said: “This is a highly prestigious event, timed perfectly on the back of the World Cup 2010. It's a worldwide showcase for junior football, featuring over 600 Academy-trained quality footballers, many of whom will certainly be amongst the stars of the future. Torbay is the superb location for this illustrious event, with great facilities, numerous attractions and a real holiday feel. I'm sure these budding superstars will have a memorable experience, both on and off the field.”

Elizabeth Pippett, Visitor Services Manager at the English Riviera Tourist Board said: “We were thrilled to hear about this international tournament and are sure it will bring some excitement and fun to the Bay. We have been working very hard with the organisers to try and accommodate the players at this very busy time and are keen to hear from any accommodation providers who might be able to help out. If we can make this a success it will almost certainly lead to the English Riviera being used as a respected sports venue of choice for future tournaments.”

A senior event called the Errea Cup will also take place during 2011, with matches taking place in Torquay, Dawlish, Newton Abbot and Stoke Gabriel. The brochure and website for the Copa Riviera Cup will be available from the end of November.
