When Ted Thomas joined the Brixham Band in 1951 as a young man of 19, little did he guess that he would still be a regular player aged 84! Amazingly, Ted still rehearses twice a week with the band during the winter months, plays for numerous Christmas events, as well as every Monday and Thursday evening during the summer months, when the band entertains locals and visitors with free concerts under the Old Fish Market, rarely ever missing a night.
Ted started on cornet, but changed to Trombone in 1976 and is now the lead trombonist in the band.
There was an enforced 2 year absence for National service 1952-54 but while Ted was in Wuppental, Germany with the Durham Light Infantry, he bought a second hand trumpet and used to practise in the bathroom block. He admits “I was tempted to join the regimental band in Berlin but missed my lovely girlfriend Marion too much”. Ted and Marion have now been married for 61 years, with 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
There was another brief interlude for heart surgery in 1993, but after only a few weeks, Ted was back playing again…
When Ted joined, the band was known as the Brixham British Legion Band but subsequently changed its name to the Brixham Town Band, (admitting ladies from 1976).
The current Musical Director of the band, David Phillips, joined the band soon after Ted, in 1953, with some gaps living in other areas for work purposes, and played in most sections of the band before appointment as Musical Director. Between them, he and Ted have an estimated 125 Years dedicated service.
When asked what has kept him loyal for so long, Ted says “I would like to carry on as long as I am able. I guess music is in my blood- It would be a miserable world without it.”
Brixham Town Band is always ready to welcome new members, young or old, beginners or experienced, and there is no obligation to stay for 65 Years! They are
able to offer free tuition, plenty of fun and, in most cases, free use of an instrument and music.
