Firstly, it sees the unveiling of the first phase of the Shoalstone Revival project, which aims to breathe new life into Shoalstone Pool, securing its future as a top class destination for locals and tourists alike. Extensive work has been done to repair and improve the facility after a grant of £49,500 from the Coastal Revival fund in December 2015. If you haven’t been down to the pool for a while, you are in for quite a treat.
Secondly, this year marks the pool’s 90th birthday: it was in 1926 that the works were done to give the pool the shape it still holds today.
We are planning to kickstart our birthday celebrations on the opening day with a fancy dress swim for all who dare! The lifeguards will be wearing specially adapted uniforms, and we are looking forward to welcoming lots of visitors in their finest 1920s attire to bring some historical glamour to the start of this special season at the pool.
In another nod to the pool’s history, the ribbon will be cut by Claire Bowman-White and her daughter, Dora, who are descendants of Minnie Bowman – the local lady who for many years opened the pool by jumping off the diving board draped in a union jack.
Finally, and also as part of our 90th birthday celebrations, we will be launching the Shoalstone Memories project: an attempt to reach out to the Brixham community past and present and collect memories of the pool to conserve for future generations.
It would be wonderful to be able to share the start of this season with as many people as possible, so please do come along.Follow
