‘With these hands'

St Mary's Flower Festival 2009 took the theme ‘With these hands' , which the talented flower arrangers chose to interpret in a variety of ways in displays, exhibited throughout the church.

Arrangements included the illustration of trades and professions, skills and hobbies, and a few choosing religious themes, as they reflected on the Hands of God, ‘hands which Vicar Anne Burden said ,' created the world and human life, hands which still heal and bless.'

In terms of trades the arrangements for ‘Fishing' had beautiful white flowers set in blue nets and traditional lobster pot whilst ‘Carpentry', had coiled leaves echoing the shavings of wood and the ‘Farming' display looked like the harvest festivals of old with a cornucopia of fruit and vegetables amongst the sheaves of flowers, adorning the pulpit. The work of the ‘Medical Profession' was recognised, ‘Potters' noted for their talents and the work of the ‘Armed Forces' were also remembered.

The lavish and vivid display for ‘Dressmaking' included arrangements of flowers reflecting the colours of the fabric wrapped around the tailor's dummy, whilst ‘Cooking' colourfully mixed flowers and vegetables and the whole of the church had columns, pews and choir stalls decorated with a repetition of flower arrangements creating a powerful vision colour throughout the length of the church.

Anne Burden said, ‘Thank you to everybody who has worked so hard, in so many different ways, to make this event possible.”The Festival runs from August Wed 12th to Sun 16 th and included a variety of events including a Fish Supper , Gala Concert on Saturday night and on the closing Sunday there will be a normal service at 8am and 11am, with the church open from 1pm to 5pm for viewing and at 5.30pm Songs of Praise.
