The ship Ice Prince had sent out a distress call as her cargo had shifted and she had developed a 25% list which in the end became 40%. The HMS Cumberland which was at anchor in Torbay, Salcombe and Torbay Lifeboats made for the stricken ship. As they arrived Portland helicopter was on scene and agreed to lift off 12 of the crew, the other 8 crew were then taken off in very difficult conditions by Torbay Lifeboat after 50 or so attempts, while Salcombe Lifeboat stood by ready
to pick up any one if they fell into the sea.

The awards last night were for those people who made the rescue possible
and were presented by the captain of HMS Cumberland Commander Peter Sparks.

RNLI Vellums were presented to Captain Kevin Balls and crew of Portland
