| With a proliferation of fuchsias, dahlias,
roses and assorted flowers, judge Roy Halsly also had a healthy
crop of vegetables to assess, with several entries by Steve Squires
including his large beetroots netting him a first prize. Overall
for the best collection of vegetables in show the Ellis Cup went
to Helen Huxman, who also proved to be a whizz in the Domestic
section, sharing the Summer Cup with Moira Withey for their sumptuous
cakes, scones and preserves. These were enough to tempt visitors
viewing the show to stop and partake of the equally appealing
refreshments provided by the Horticultural Society Members. |

| This year the once again the Floral
Art section was popular as entrants created superb flower arrangements
inspired by titles such as 'Reach for the Skies', 'Reflections'
and' Land Ahoy!' Whilst June Marshall gaining a first prize for
her 'Reach for the Skies', the Connabeer Cup for the most points
in the section, went to Marilyn Sterling, with arrangements including
her version of 'Gardener's World'. |

Baxter once again delighted viewers with her magnificent succulent
entries, gaining the William of Orange Trophy, although Chairman
of the Horticultural Society John Smith gave her strong competition
in the cacti and succulent classes, gaining the Thevenard
Trophy for the man with the most points in the show.
This
year the most inspirational achievement came from Christine
Bayliss who received 10 cups including the Agatha Christy
Cup for the variety and quality of her entries.

| These ranged from roses and well arranged
troughs of flowers, to first prizes in craftwork including knitting
and crochet. Having been recently diagnosed with MS Christine
said,” I was surprised to do so well as some days I struggle to
get out in the garden, but there's no use in giving up, when it
gives me so much pleasure.” Christine's garden won her a first
prize in the Torbay in Bloom Competition last year and as she
celebrates her 50 th wedding anniversary this September, her husband
helps with the watering and heavy work, and has built frames to
help her continue to get up and down her three tiered garden.
