Students from South Devon College have been busy this term taking on the challenge of designing a new website for the Brixham Branch of the Chamber of Commerce.

Business and Computing Tutor Jade Ward and College leaders wanted more opportunities to work with the local community, so when Joe Cloutman Chairman of the Brixham Branch of the Chamber of Commerce approached them with the idea of redeveloping www.Brixham.uk.com, they were keen to get involved.

12 students took up the brief, with four being selected to go forward and take part in the final of the competition on July 2nd when the new site would be selected.

The Web design judges
The event held at South Devon College proved to be successful social evening with guests enjoying College catering as the ‘Web Factor' got underway. In the tradition of the ‘X Factor' candidates presented their designs to the audience of parents, College Governors, members of the Chamber of Commerce and awaited responses from the panel of judges.
The Web design students Chairman Joe Cloutman, local artist Nicky Stevenson and College Web Designer Alan Mcfadyen, gave comments as Rachel Wood, James Wilbraham, Joe George and Ashley Kent stepped up to the microphone to explain what had influenced their design work , whilst aspects of their websites were projected behind them.
In Rachel's presentation she explained how she had used Dreamweaver 8 and Photoshop CS2 and enjoyed creating the games page, with Joe Cloutman asking if she had done extra research to included information on the Heritage Trawlers, Brixham Battery, and the Geo Park status for Berry Head. Both she and James who followed her presentation had not, but both had gone for a blue theme.

Third candidate Joe had instead used the Brixham colours of burgundy and yellow, as he explained he had gone for the Heritage feel to his site, although keeping it streamlined and modern in layout.

However it was Ashley who won all of the judges over with his equally professional looking site that included changing flash images of Brixham and light box presentation of larger click on images.

Nicky said “You have worked hard to full fill the whole brief,” Alan commented on the easy navigation, and good technical features, whilst Joe said, “If this were a stick of rock for a resort, it would have style written all the way through it!”

Chosen as the new site, Ashley was presented with his prize of a Siemens Lap Top, and Joe said, “Just participating will have given all the students extra expertise, which is the most valuable experience of all,” whilst Jade thanked all of the students for their hard work, with Rachel Wood and Joe George being highly commended and James Wilbraham commended.

College Deputy Principal Steven Criddle said in his speech,” We are keen on competition, encouraging entrepreneurship and working as hard as we can with the local community. Being the local college we are here to help learners and support the local economy, with this project providing a perfect opportunity to do this.” Jade Ward said that thanks to the success of this project, they hoped to continue this scheme next year by working with other local non profit making organisations.
