Come and join us?

If you are looking for a new interest or hobby, then take a look at some of the clubs and organisations that came together on Saturday 19th at the Scala Hall to invite new members to come and join them in an event sponsored by the Brixham Community Partnership.

The Pride in Brixham Ladies

Pride in Brixham were present hoping that new volunteers would join them to help with the work they undertake to keep Brixham blooming, with several floral displays and the new Mayflower garden near Kings quay to tend to.

They are also keen to have people get involved with this year's Christmas Parade on Sat 5th December. For further details or to join contact Mary on 01803 851738.

Brixham Chess Club with John and Mike

Brixham Chess Club meet every Tuesday evening between 7.00pm and 10.00pm at the Royal Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen “Mike says ”We don't take things too seriously on club nights but we play in various Torbay Leagues for those who like a bit of serious competition.

”It's just £2 a night (£1 for juniors). We'd love to see you there no matter what your playing strength.” Contact 01803853647 for more details.

Eddy with Roy and Dave part of the BOMVC

To join the Brixham Orpheus Male Choir you just need to attend their practice sessions on a Thursday evening at the Christian Community Centre in Fore Street 7.15pm to 9.15pm.

Jean and Frances part of the Rivieria Singers

Whilst the traditional ladies choir of 30 plus known as the Rivera Singers meet on Wednesday evenings 7.30pm at the Community Centre Fore Street.

Both choirs sing to help raise money for charity with repertoires consisting of popular songs, traditional and sacred pieces.

Pat with the Brixham Heritage Festival

Pat Osborne was keen to promote Brixham Heritage Festival and Brixham Tourism Partnership. Last years festival was heralded as the ‘best ever' and Pat is looking forward to this year's running from the 29th May – 5th June 2010 for which she says she has already started booking acts.

Suzie and Sam from Slimming World

Slimming World were ready to sign up new members for either of their two Brixham groups, Suzie running a session at Brixham Community College, Thursdays at 6pm, 01803 883929 and Sam at Furzeham Primary School at 6.30pm on Tuesdays, 01803 310983.

Both are looking forward to week of the 28th Sept with parties throughout the week celebrating 40years of slimming world, a national event, when members and non members are invited to attend parties in a bid to create a new record for the Guinness Book of Records.

Brixham All Stars
Brixham All Stars majorettes group were present to tell people of their wonderful achievement at this year's Paignton Carnival when they won best majorettes and band entry after only been together since February, and they are still open for new members, meeting on Tuesday nights.

All Saints Church

Whilst Cancer Research Brixham advertised their Tea Dance two Wednesdays every month at the Catholic Church Hall, All Saints Church showed plenty of photos revealing plenty of community activities members of the church get involved in.

This Saturday 26th Sept the All Saints will be having an Autumn Fair in the Scala Hall 9.30am -12.30pm.

Brixham Society of Art with Marion and June

Brixham Society of Arts had a fine display of pieces of artwork and encouraged people to come along to their monthly sessions at Eden Park Primary School 7.30pm on Thursdays, the next one being the 15th October.

Derek and Roy members of the Brixham Town Band

Opposite Brixham Town band were keen to show how playing a brass instrument could be an interesting departure from everyday life and a great hobby.

They rehearse Mondays and Thursdays 7.45pm and Beginners 6.30pm Thursdays at Chestnut Drive School.

Elsie for the Brixham Lifeboat Guild

Supporting the RLNI, The Brixham Lifeboat Guild offer an all year round programme of social activities to get involved with and events that help raise funds.

Their next coffee morning is at the Berry Head Hotel on the 1st October 10am – 12pm and covering the Flag will take place in Fore Street 10am-3pm Saturday 10th October.

Dave from the Brixham Horticultural Sociey

Brixham Horticultural Society say they ‘offer a friendly atmosphere, interesting speakers' at their meetings 1st Wednesday of each month at 2pm at the Catholic Church Hall, New Road and will be having their Autumn Show at the Scala Hall on the Fri 23rd and Sat 24th October.

Brixham Square Riggers say they offer a great way to make new friends at their Square dances held at the Catholic Church Hall 8pm to 10pm Wednesdays, at a cost of £2.50, which is a great way ‘to have fun and stay healthy!'

If fitness and sport are of interest, St Mary's bowling Club offer free coaching for new members with the greens open April to September and ‘great all year round social calendar.' The club up at St Mary's Park can be contacted on 019803 858058.

Jean for University of 3rd Age and Brixham Fuchsia and Geranium Group

The Brixham and Geranium Club meet every second Friday of the month 9th and 23rd October at Community Centre Fore St. 2.30pm to 4pm.

The Brixham Branch of the University of the Third Age meet at the Brixham Rugby Club 2-4pm every second Tuesday of the month next being the 13th October.

Linda and Dave from the Ukulele Club

The Torbay Ukulele Club meet every Thursday at Brixham Rugby Club and ‘no experience is necessary to have fun learning to play this instrument!' For further details call Dave on 01803 852051.

Doreen and Bev from the Brixham Ladies Forum

Brixham & District Ladies Forum have just celebrated their 40th anniversary and meet every alternative Tuesday 10-11.30 at the Catholic Church Hall with speakers and social events, coffee and chats.

Louise from the South Devon Players

The South Devon Players is an inclusive Brixham based community theatre group specialising in newly written period plays based upon South West history and mythology. The group rehearse weekly at Brixham Royal British Legion, Bakers Hill.

Presently around 15 members and we welcome new members who are hard working committed and able to work as part of a diverse team, with previous theatre knowledge not a pre-requisite.

Auditions for the next production 'Troy the Panto' will be taking place at Brixham Royal British Legion on Sunday 27th September from 1pm until around 4pm.

Brian and Tony with The Brixham Stamp Club

Brixham Stamp club meets at Chestnut Heights Community Centre Poplar Close at 7.15 on a monthly basis subscriptions are currently £7.00 per year and there are a variety of talks and events throughout the year ,so why not give Tony a ring on 01803 858018, to join the 15-20 people who enjoy what the club has to offer at present.

Chestnut Heights Community Centre is now changing to Higher Brixham Community Centre and will be re-launched for local people to be able to hire, do workshops and run clubs. The open day to which all are welcome is Saturday 17th October 10am onwards when there will be ‘competitions cakes and a variety of other stalls. Acting manager of the centre Casey said, ‘We also want local people to tell us what they want at their Community centre'. For the Centre Committee AGM all welcome on Tuesday 27th October, 7pm onwards.

Shop Mobility is looking for volunteers to help run the centre based at the Central Car Park in Brixham with opening times 10am – 4pm till October then 10am – 1pm throughout the winter season.

Oliver

Finally BOADS Brixham Operatic and Dramatic Society were on hand to advertise their latest production of Oliver, Wed 28th Oct to Sat 31st Oct and are always open to new members. The box office and further details can be obtained on 01803 857654.

The performance will be in the Brixham Theatre and Brixham Arts & Theatre Society is keen for anyone to come along and get involved in their bid to maximise the Brixham theatres potential as a community resource.

They are looking for community support and any new committee members at their Annual General Meeting at the Scala Hall on Wednesday 14th October at 7.15pm. All are invited to come and ‘help shape the future of the Brixham Theatre and Scala Hall!'

Only with a strong community support do they feel they will be able to move forward with current proposals, taking them into further negotiations with Torbay Council.

The ‘come and join us!' event which ran from 10am-3pm and sponsored by Brixham Community Partnership shows the diversity of organisations, offering ways to find something to do in your spare time or as a volunteer in Brixham. This is only a fraction of what is available to join in Brixham as the table close to the entrance was piled with leaflets from many more clubs and organisations that did not attend and would not have fitted into the Hall on this occasion.
