Brixham
Christmas Carnival
With 20 floats and approximately 350 people
joining the procession, the Brixham Carnival left the harbour
and succeeded to parade around the town centre twice, after
a heavy down pour threatened to curtail the festive fun on Saturday
December 4th. Fortunately just after 4.30 pm the rain stopped
and the Carnival got underway!

| Led by a local Town Crier, Tony Criddle and the
Okehampton Marching Band, the procession moved smoothly round
the streets of Brixham featuring the Nativity made up of local
school children. They were followed closely by the wisemen, all
called John apart from grandson Jack! |

The Carnival
encouraged many groups and individuals to dress up and create
themed scenes such as 'Christmas at the Abbey', whilst other
floats displayed Carnival Queens from all around the South West
including Miss Torbay. Local businesses also were encouraged
to participate with the vintage vehicle from Eric Lloyds and
Co, that carried the

The Mayor said to chairman of Pride in Brixham Mary Thompson,
the group responsible for organising the Carnival, "I hope
you don't mind me gate crashing your event?" |

| This year Pride in Brixham were pleased to have
Morris Dancing involved in the event, contrasting the Caribbean
Carnival Dancers and the Brixham All Stars Majorettes. The Morris
Dancers had performed earlier in the day in Fore St, where carol
singing had been also arranged from the steps of the Methodist
Church by the Salvation Army and other churches in the town. |

| With many individuals keen to dress up as costumed
characters, members of the Brixham Young Volunteers became gingerbread
men, a hedgehog and Supermen, after being super helpful throughout
the day! They helped to put up marquees for the evening party,
which was enjoyed by those taking part as they returned to Oxen
Cove, after the procession. |

| Mary Thompson said," There were plenty
of hotdogs, burgers, cakes and hot drinks for everyone at the party
, with 44 Gun a local group providing the music and with one exception,
everyone who said they were coming to the Carnival did, and we
had one unexpected arrival too!" |

 |
| Brixham Battery Heritage Museum turned out along
with a group of belly dancers and familiar sight Edgar Laurence
also joined the procession with the rhythms of local music group
Samba Jam to keep them in step. |

| There were also several sledges being pulled including
Father Christmas, the Mayor of Cowtown and the team of Huskies
managed to propel their owner round the streets of Brixham. For
part of his journey Father Christmas also provided snow like bubbles
from the back of his sleigh. |

| Waiting for the Carnival to start in the pouring
rain everyone had crowded under the Old Fish Market to listen
to Rock Samba and eat hot chestnuts with more people arriving
to watch as the rain cleared away. |

Mary Thompson said
of the whole event," it was a brilliant evening with
everything coming together as planned. Only the weather was
out of our control but we managed to get everything sorted
during the day and after the downpour we managed two circuits
of the town and an enjoyable party. Thank you to everyone
who helped or turned up to watch. We are extremely grateful
to everyone who contributed throughout the whole process."
