Brixham's Hap'Nin
is a huge success!
On Saturday July 12th
St Mary's Park was packed with families well before the school
choirs launched the day's events at this years Brixham Hap'
Nin. Eden Park's Choir and Band got the party started with their
version of ‘Run for the sun', echoing everyones desire for summer
to get underway! |
|
| The Brixham Church of England School
Choir dedicated their first song to those who use the sea with
the Rod stewart clasic ‘Sailing‘, following this with the equally
popular Joseph tune ‘Any dream will do'. |
|
High School Musical
was the main theme for the Chestnut Primary School Choir as
they sang several songs from the musical, starting with ‘Together',
dressed in their cheerleader outfits and pompoms.
|
|
|
Whilst
a major focus of the Brixham Hap'Nin are the musical performances
there were plenty of other things for families to do as inflatables,
bouncy castles and stalls provided entertainment and refreshments
around the site. Children transformed into their favourite
creatures, whilst some becoming pirates after visits to face
painters.
|
|
|
Others enjoyed ‘Soak the
Pirate', with many of the children finding it easy to hit
Capt Blood and Guts in the face with a wet sponge. Mock sword
fights also proved popular with the Brixham Buccaneers including;
Steely Eyed Jack, Maddening Maddy, Mad Ethel, Canon Balls
Jessie and Calypso, ‘Brixham's own Belly Dancer.'
|
|
The Brixham Fire Fighters
in their Static Display Vehicle provided a contrasting educational
experience, encouraging people to go inside their enclosed stand
to recognise fire hazards within the home. |
|
A bedroom filled with articles creating dangerous
situations such as plastic shoes on a gas fire, matches left out
near the baby's cot and a whole jumble of electrical wires and
plugs demanded our need to pay attention to bad habits. |
 |
Also
the flat screen TV presentation showed DVD's of different kinds
of fires, with Fire Fighters Nick Purton, James Powder, Richard
Morris and Paul Hughes keen to talk about issues of fire safety.

| In keeping with the musical theme within
the event, Purer Sound and Light joined the stall holders this
year, demonstrating their guitars, lights and amps. Manager Andi
Lymes mentioned that their guitars range from vintage brands to
custom builds starting from around a £100 upwards to 1000's.
Also they were the only local business that delt with lighting
especially the new LED range and also still having the generic
range of lights. |
 |
|
There
were some PA systems that they brought and people were encouraged
to sit and try the guitars and they could order or buy and walk
away with them.
Not forgetting those
interesting Sponge Bob outfits, ¾ guitars and flying
ucallees. Enjoying their first outdoor display, Andi, Dave and
Ali were also excited about being asked to the Fishstock Music
Festival taking place on the Brixham Quayside on Saturday
13th September. Visit: www.fishstockbrixham.co.uk

| Back on the sound stage Brixham group
MIU whose young members are based at the Brixham Community College
were very well received by the masses of families and picnickers
all prepared with their ground sheets. Having won Battle of the
bands earlier in the year, the audience thouroughly enjoyed singing
along to some classic punk and rock tunes such as ‘Wild Thing',
‘Blitzkrieg Bop' and ‘Teenage Kicks', all performed in MIU's very
unique style! |
|
Later Frenzy played a session including the tune
‘After the boys of summer had gone' and the memorable ‘Valerie',
with attention throughout the afternoon turning to the popular
POW Wrestling in the centre of the park. |
 |
|
|
Here
the final winner of the POW Championship Belt was Robbie Devonshire.
Local wrestler Robbie
said, “I and the other wrestlers want to thank each and every
one of you for your support today, which helped me win the championship
in my own town!” |
Many local charities
were on the field raising funds for their indiviual causes with
the Brixham Lions Club, The Ladies from the RNLI, The Rotary
Club and the Devon Army Cadet Force selling their combat clothes
at £2 per item. Yvonne and Margo with their ‘Support the
Troops' campaign had a calendar and raffle stall. They encouraged
local people to buy the 2009 Brixham Calendars' from which a
portion of the money will go to creating ‘Goodie Bags' for serving
British troops in combate zones such as Afganistan.
|
|
|
| There were folders of letters received
back from some of the troops thanking eveyone for their support
and they were happy to know that others back at home cared. Ace
Taxis on Union Lane are open to bring in ‘goodies' like biscuits
and sweets to send on and also Yvonne and Margo will be at the
Torbay Steam Rally near the Park and Ride from Friday
1st to Sunday 3rd August, for anyone wanting more details.

The annual Tug of War competition proved to be as entertaining
as usual, even though only 2 mens teams came forward this year
to battle it out. ‘Team Tug', the Brixham Rugby Club entry and
first time entry the Brixham Farmers, took each other on in the
best of five pulls. With Team Tug winning the first two, it looked
like an easy contest, but the Farmers managed to find some strength
on the third pull to get themseleves back in the running. |
 |
However
the fourth pull was the decider, with Team Tug winning and carrying
off the Trophy.
Capt
of ‘Team Tug' Shaun Onslow received the award from Martin Geffers
and the crew included Chris Dorlon, Hank Hendrickson, Dan Stead,
Adam Thomas, Richard Gardener, Mike Shears, Lee Squires, John
Lambson, Steve Trust and Matt Roberts. |
 |
|
Nevertheless
the competition was far from over as younger enthusiatic junior
teams took part, with team a beating team b. This was followed
by the ladies tug of war unfortunatley deemed null and void
as more and more were keen to have a go and spectators joined
in latching on to the loosing ladies team's end! |
|
|
| As the excitement of the tug of war
games ended many families and stall holders prepared to leave
at the close of the afternoon session. On stage ‘Lauren', having
made a name for herself in Brixham as a songwriter sang her own
material, whilst playing the guitar .She also included a few cover
songs, with an Amy Winehouse number impressively evokative of
the original artist. |
|
|
Despite
the cold air drawing in as the bands and musicians got ready
for the evening session, committee member Martin Jeffers was
pleased at the success of the afternoon.
He said, “With the
weather being a major factor this year for outdoor events, today
was brilliant! The weather held out, and lots of families in
Brixham had lots of fun!” |
