Battery Heritage Open Days
'Heritage
Open Days' events at the Battery proved to be a great success.
With over 400 visitors coming along and donating £250
towards our 'War Shelter Restoration Appeal' fund.
Stewards
took the more adventurous visitors down the 30m underground
ammunition tunnel - led by torch carrying guides they were fascinated
to learn that they were the first groups to enter the tunnel
in 63 years! The tunnel and war shelter rooms having been blocked
up in 1947. |

group of visitors into the 'ready ammunition' tunnel.

Visitors expressed
amazement at the good condition of both tunnel and war shelter
rooms and hoped to see them fully restored in the near future
- many commented that they are a great tourist attraction and
an asset to Brixham.
The group
will install electric lighting as soon as funds allow.
As well as working as a farmer in a 'reserved occupation Albert
manned the guns at night and weekends as a back up to the regular
Royal Artillerymen who were stationed at the Battery from 1940-45.
