Volunteering is an everyday activity

Thanks to funding from Learn Devon the Brixham Adult & Community Learning Team have been able to offer a taster course designed to move people into employment or study through further education.

Students at the new library on the volunteering course

The taster held at Paignton library enabled nine people to become aware of the skills required for volunteering, volunteer's rights and the wider world of opportunities for volunteering.

Also how voluntary organisations provide support to their volunteers and enable them to move forward into work and training.

Tutor, Gail Tucker, was able to give an overview of the sector which she has worked in for almost two decades. Students were given the chance to assess their literacy skills and to help decide on which elements would be most use to them on the Level 2 certificated NCFE course for Volunteers. Everyone present was given the chance to sign up for this course which is free and funded by CVA.

One participant realised that he is already working as a volunteer just by helping run a football club. Others were encouraged to think about where they could help out as they will have a placement as part of their course.

There are other free courses funded by Learn Devon that lead onto qualifications, go onto www.learndevon.co.uk or find out more about local courses by looking at the South Devon College website on www.southdevon.ac.uk
