Two Authors Visit Churston

Churston Ferrers Grammar School welcomed two authors in one week this term: local writer Tim Bowler and Tom Palmer. Tim returned to Churston to speak to all of year 9 students and to run a creative writing workshop. Some of the students study his novel Starseeker as part of their year 9 curriculum and they were eager to meet the ‘face behind the author.' ‘It is always fun to hear how a writer organises his day and how he goes about creating certain characters,' said Freya Revell.

Ideas about crafting a story were discussed and Tim was questioned on his inspiration for his stories. He stressed how important the ‘honing' process was before he was finally satisfied with his work. Tim is always very happy to listen to the pupils' own writing in progress and to make recommendations as to how it might be modified.

He read extracts from his work and the day ended on an upbeat note with students wanting autographs and photographs.

Students were delighted subsequently to listen to his pod cast from his website where Churston pupils were given a special mention.

Tom Palmer In the autumn term Marcella Turner won a short story writing competition based around a football adventure story called ‘Foul Play' and as part of her prize Tom Palmer came to visit the students at Churston. He was keen to promote the ‘habit of reading' and a discussion ensued as to the type of texts which students and staff regularly consumed.

Tom also shared some of his experiences while researching his novels and described some of the exotic locations he had visited which were eventually used as a setting for his stories. The pupils were most impressed that he had met famous stars such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo and the late great George Best. The visit ended with a penalty shoot out competition in the gymnasium with Mr Owers, headmaster, in goal and students desperate to score against him. The two winning penalty takers were each awarded with a trophy.
