NEW POOL, NEW COURSES

With the re-opening of the Brixham Indoor Pool as the Admiral Centre there has been a flurry of activity co-ordinated by the Brixham Adult & Community Learning Centre. Long established courses such as Aqua Aerobics and Aqua Babies have filled rapidly and there has been such a demand for aqua aerobics that a second class is being planned. Brixham Adult & Community Learning (ACL) is also addressing the requests received for Aqua Natal classes.

Teaching Swimming and Lifeguarding courses

The need for trained swimming teachers has also been identified and the ACL Dept. has arranged an ‘STA Certificate in Teaching Swimmers (Beginners)' course to commence on 14th March in Brixham. This is a first for the area and will be provided free of charge to young people aged 16-18 on 31/08/08 thanks to funding from the Learning and Skills Council.

This course is a mixture of theory and practical and will allow successful participants teach up to 10 beginners, act as an assistant teacher or teach a larger class under direct supervision. The course includes teaching a range of strokes, shallow water diving, health & safety, hygiene and building confidence.

The course runs for two weekends and participants must have a Lifeguarding Qualification prior to enrolling. The fee is £140 for students outside the free criteria.

Another RLSS: Lifeguarding course is planned for 19th February and this is also free to young people who meet the age criteria. This popular course will conclude on 8th of March and has led to many young people gaining employment locally in the holidays and whilst they are away at University.

Detailed programmes for the Teaching Swimming and Lifeguarding courses are available from the ACL Centre (01803 853302) or at the Admiral Centre.
