Courses aimed at people with depression offer light at the end of the tunnel.

A year ago ACE obtained funding from South West Foundation to offer a free pottery course for people with depression or low level mental health issues. The group called No Pressure Pottery started with 4 people and now has a regular 12 students.

It is very much ‘no pressure' with the start time (11am) designed to allow people to get up and motivated to come out. Tutor, Tessa Amies has a gentle approach, encouraging individuals to gently get back into society and to concentrate on something practical rather than their health.

One of the students, Linden Lynn, said “We learn new techniques with Tessa offering encouragement and support. I and others in the class have blossomed in her care.”

ACE has just secured £2,000 funding from the David Gibbons foundation to offer four more ‘No Pressure' practical classes. The existing group identified weaving, textiles, stained glass and creating a recycled sculpture for TRAIL as classes of their choice. So, during the summer term on a Friday at 11am there will be No Pressure recycled sculpture course with professional artist Beth Hughes. At present there are still places available and the course starts on May 6th.

To enrol contact Yvonne Ramos, the ACE administrator on 01803 853302. The only fee is a £5 annual membership of ACE.
