Brixham
Society of Art diamond celebration!
This year is the 60th year since
the formation of Brixham Society of Art. Over the years it has
had several locations for its meetings, and the Society is pleased
that from now on meetings will be held more locally at Eden
Park Primary School, where there are excellent facilities for
the group. Social Secretary Yvonne Short said,”We have been
made to feel very welcome at the school just as we were when
we met at Galmpton Primary School for many years!” |

As an amateur society,
a committee works on behalf of the Art group, the membership
is much wider than Brixham, with members travel from Paignton,
Galmpton, Torquay, Kinsgsteignton and Kingskerswell.
The well supported
meetings take place on a monthly basis throughout the year from
September to July, with demonstration sessions by experts in
a variety of art mediums.
Yvonne said, “The demonstrator
usually completes a picture during the session and explains
what they are doing, shares their expertise, tips and often
lighthearted tales!” |
|
Offering a chance to interact there are opportunity to ask questions,
with the work of the artist on show for people to see and the
break for refreshments allows members to talk to the demonstrator.
Members can also bring along their own work to share and display.

| The Society holds their annual exhibition
in the Scala Hall each summer and this year the dates of Brixham
Society of Art Exhibition are: Saturday 29th August until
Saturday 5th September. Last year as well as displaying and selling
members work, the sale of prints, pottery and cards were introduced
which proved to be very successful. |
|
Also a smaller, but very successful exhibition
was also held at the Berry Head Hotel and the Society hope to
be able to do this again this year. Yvonne said,”We have been
really well supported by the management at the Berry Head Hotel
and appreciate their generosity.” The group enjoys separate social
events including a Christmas lunch at the Berry Head Hotel and
an evening get-together in April. |
As Social
Secretary Yvonne said, “We would like to see an increase in
membership and encourage younger members to join. The fee for
painting members will be £15-00 from April 2009 and £12-00
for non painting members.”
If anyone wants to
attend a meeting as a guest to start with they would be
very welcome. The next meeting is on Thursday 19th February
at 7-30 p.m. Tony Jackson will be giving a demonstration in
the use of acrylics.” |
