Society of Artists reviews of their works

Exhibiting last summer at the Scala Hall, Brixham Society of Art have created a display of over 200 paintings by fifty local artists.

With all paintings for sale, several within the opening hour were marked with sold signs!

Boats on the Hard by Micheal R. Clarke in Pastel
Britannia II by Edward Girard
Brixham Harbour by Mary Bradley in Oils selected Winner
Many of the Society's artists have been inspired by scenes of Brixham in the exhibition. Whilst a maritime theme is apparent, generally the subject matter is wide ranging including beautiful naturalistic interpretations of butterflies and animals, to expressive paintings of flowers.
Brixham Harbour by Peter Garratt in Watercolour the Winner
Butterfly by C.Darwood in Oil
Calla leaves by David Cowell in Alternative Media the Winner

Styles and use of media also offer a great deal of choice for those wanting to find their favourite view or interpretation, with the artists work divided into categories of watercolour , oil and alternative media for the purposes of judging. Prior to the doors being opened to the public a selection was made for each category followed by a highly commended in each section, although members of the public wandering around the exhibition soon locate their personal favourites.

Italian Reflections by Marion Turner
Kingfisher by C.Derwood
Patchwork Poppies by Diane Richards in watercolour

In the watercolour section Peter Garratt was selected for his atmospheric view of Brixham harbour whilst John Andre's more stylized use of the media attracted the judge's attention. In oil, another view of the harbour gained Mary Bradley the winning slot, whilst Gillian Baker's Sunset Escape was highly commended. Finally for his unusual Calla Leaves in the alternative media section David Cowell's digital painting was proclaimed a winner, alongside more traditional acrylic, pastels and mixed media, with Dianne Richards highly commended for Heat Haze.

Sea Haven by John Andre in Watercolour Highly Commended

President of the Society Marion Turner was extremely pleased with the opening response and sales of work and the comment book said, ‘Wonderful standard throughout, hard to believe the pictures are by amateurs.' Indeed as Chairman June Marshall explained the society has at present over 80 members and many enjoy the demonstrations the group attend throughout the year.

Sunset Escape by Gillian Baker in Oils Highly Commended

The benefits the Society has to offer include watching the demonstrations given by professional artists, enjoying exchanging views with fellow artist, and an evening out once a month. Meeting on the third Thursday of every month at Galmpton Primary School 7.30pm to 9.00pm, you can come along as a visitor, entry £1, or speak to the Membership Secretary, with a view to joining.
