BRIXHAM STUDENT
WINS TOPPS TILES COMMUNITY PROJECT
Shirley Brown is a student at Brixham
Adult & Community Learning Centre where she enrolled last
autumn for Tessa Amies ‘Mosaics, Clay and Glass' class. |

Tessa entered her first piece of work
for the Topps Tile Achievement in Mosaics Competition, alongside
six other Brixham students: Laura Smithson, Joan Penge, Sarah
Thomas, Jane Grasse, Allyson McNair Chaplin, and Lisa Newton.
All were commended on the high
standard of their work, but Shirley won the award for a harbour
scene that is very evocative which shows her competence and
design skills.

The judge said, “I can feel the breeze
on my face as this delightful sailing boat pulls out of harbour.
The red and green hull contrasts nicely with the blues of the
background. The white sails are well formed as are the buildings.
I also liked the whispy clouds which added even more content
to this delightful and accomplished scene.”
Shirley has won a £100 cheque for herself and £300
in materials from Topps Tiles for community projects which will
enable others to try their hand and get interested in Mosaic
making.
This term, Shirley is working on
another sail boat where she is trying more complex techniques
in clipping tesserae to create a flow around the subject. She
has also created two paving slabs to try yet another method
where the piece is created upside down with cement poured onto
it, to produce the slab.
The award ceremony will
take place at Topps Tiles on Thursday 7th April at 11am.
