Adult Learners' Week in Torbay

Adult Learners' Week is a national celebration of adult learning and the benefits of adult learning for all. It also recognises the way learning can change lives, especially for people who did not do well at school or who have had other difficulties to overcome in their lives. This event is promoted by NIACE, the national Institute for Adult & Continuing Education.

An award ceremony has been organised in Torbay for almost a decade, each year bringing remarkable people's lives and successes to public notice. Often when people take up learning and succeed they get ‘the learning bug' and go on to further learning.

Brixham Belly dancing class

The event held at South Devon College celebrates learners, volunteers, groups of people who learn together, inspirational teachers, and families who share their learning. This year it takes place on Friday 14th May, with the presentation of certificates from Mayor, Nick Bye, followed by demonstrations of belly dancing, ensemble singing and Polish by adult students.

Then, from Saturday 15th to Friday 21st May the three Adult & Community Learning Centres at Brixham, Paignton and Torquay offer a range of FREE workshops and exhibitions.

In Brixham, workshops based around the seashore at Shoalstone, include The History of Shoalstone Pool (Rowan Molesworth), Seashore Creative Writing (Gail Tucker), Rockpool Ramble for families (Emma Reece) and Geology Walk (John Risdon). There is also an exhibition at the centre called the View from my Beach Hut.

Paignton will be holding a poetry competition on the theme of ‘The Weather'. There will also be a week long exhibition of learners' work celebrating a year of achievement. It includes framed paintings, woodcarvings, jewellery, sugarcraft, creative writing and more.

Torquay offer an Open day on May 15th where you can view the new Torquay Community College, and to see the wonderful facilities that will be available from September. Workshops on the day are Italian Cookery Workshop (Giovanni Butto), Recycle your clothes, Rags to Riches (Manuela Tarquini) and Oil Painting Workshop (Basil Sanders).
