Local families who recently attended Brixham College’s PTA Summer Fair have helped raise over £1000 which will ploughed into the school’s Duke of Edinburgh scheme, jointly funded by Brixham College’s PTA and The Rotary Club of Brixham.
“It was a beautiful day and a good turnout from both the local community as well as Brixham College. Everybody had great fun with lots to do and visitors were very generous,” says Suzanne Ellis, Chair, Brixham College PTA. “We’re looking forward to holding lots of other events throughout the academic year. Our next major one will be our Christmas Fair in mid-November which will give people a chance to get presents early,” she adds.
During the event there was a lot to keep the whole family fed, refreshed and entertained. Amongst them a BBQ, craft & gift stalls, huge inflatables, games & competitions, football fun with Brixham Football Development Academy, taekwondo display as well as music from Brixham Big Band.
The monies raised from the Brixham College PTA Summer Fair will be used to purchase start up equipment, including tents, for the 45 Year 9 Brixham College students who have already signed up to their Bronze DofE journey and are either choosing, planning or carrying out their volunteering, physical and skills sections, with expeditions taking place later in the year.
With the Rotary’s aim to support local causes with an emphasis on youth, the latest monies add to the record breaking £1,600 already donated by the Rotary club of Brixham to Brixham College’s DofE scheme from its annual charity concert.
Research by the United Learning Trust recently revealed the attributes and characteristics which employers find most attractive in candidates when selecting new employees. At the top of the table, just above work experience, was The Duke of Edinburgh award – which they valued the highest. As a result, the financial support from the PTA and Rotary will be a fitting reward for the attitude, resilience and commitment youngsters need to attain their DofE award. It will undoubtedly help them gain leadership, team building, perseverance and organisational skills to provide a powerful boost to their C.Vs and employability.Follow
