United Reformed Church finds a new home in Brixham

On Sunday 16th November a procession of people followed the large colourful banner down to New Rd, as the United Reformed Church- URC, left its present home on Bolton St, to take up residence in their new church building opposite Brixham Town Hall.

Locking up for the last time

Members of the URC were joined by Christians from other churches in the town, including people from the Salvation Army, Methodist Church, Beacon of Light Fellowship and Brixham Baptist, as they sang one last time in the old URC building, before marching down to what was previously the CO OP Funeral building on New Rd, to establish their new place of worship.

Before setting off, The Revd. Chris Searle minister of the URC, read from Joshua Chapter1 describing the Israelites preparing to move into the Promised Land. Reaching the new venue the rooms at the back of the premises had been ripped out. Here the URC, have managed to create a temporary space for worship, whilst building work continues to re –develop the main area inside the building with new ceilings, plastered walls, decoration and carpets.

Walking through Bolton Cross Chris also likened the URC church, to the Israelites as they wandered around the desert having to set up their altar in temporary places to worship God, as the group await planning permission to develop other buildings around the site and complete their main hall.

Coffee, tea and biscuits afterwards were enjoyed in the area at the front of the building, freshly painted, carpeted and ready for the church to launch its new office and prayer room.
Passing on the light
Whilst some were sad to say goodbye to a place where members had been baptised and married in the past, all were in favour of the change and looked forward to an opportunity to move into a more central location within the community.
