Pentecost 2010
On Sunday 23rd May,
Fore Street, Brixham was a mass of chairs, people and flags
as Christians in Brixham celebrated Pentecost. The event, put
on by CTiB (Christians Together in Brixham), recognized the
‘Birth of the Christian Church' nearly 2000 years ago.
Revd Ian Blyde started
the Pentecost Celebration welcoming everyone in his jovial way
with modern day house keeping, explaining where the fire exits
were and pointing to the two ends of Fore Street. He also pointed
out that last year there was a practice run of what would happen
if an ambulance needed to come down the street, with an actual
arrival and departure of the paramedics.
On to Pentecost and
Ian said, “It's a wonderful occasion, celebrating The Spirit
of God which firstly came down on Jesus' disciples 2000 years
ago, to help them to know God and His will for them.” Ian continued
with, ‘ this is Jesus' promise that the Holy Spirit will be
helping us, uplifting us and filling us with joyful celebration.'

Prayers for Pentecost followed, ending with
The Lord's Prayer and the first worship song ‘Walk, Walk in
the Light' began the praise and worship for the day, with Jonathan
Oliverio on the accordion. |
| In the heat of the morning there was
the relief of a cool breeze as Michael Atwill read Acts 2. Verses
1 to 8 and 11, which describes the rush of a violent wind from
Heaven followed by divided tongues of fire upon the disciples,
this being the Holy Spirit filling them with God's Spirit, so
that they started talking in foreign languages. |

With a pause for
thought by the Revd. Anne Burden, attention was focused on Jesus
being the first fruit.
Then 50 days after
Jesus' resurrection the Holy Spirit was given to be a helper,
and He is there to help His Church. |
| Tolah a singer and musician from the
Ukraine was introduced by Revd Bob Hyde and Tolah began to sing
a song ‘Let your will be done', which reflects the Lord's Prayer
verses ‘On earth as in Heaven, let your will be done.' Tolah has
been in England a while and will staying until June, he was amazed
that all the Christian Churches got together in the town centre
for Pentecost. |

Barbara
Vond and Captain Lynne Davies of Brixham Salvation Army said
prayers for the Church, the Family of God and for the world,
which is the ‘Family of Humankind.' The worship song ‘Spirit
of the living God, fall afresh on me' proceeded the next reading
by Chris Guy from Acts 10 about Jesus' disciple Peter. After
having a dream Peter was surprised to find that God wanted to
show him that God accepts people from every nation. Further
on Peter speaks about Jesus, and the Holy Spirit coming upon
all the Gentiles who heard the message of the Gospel. |

Following
this a rainbow coloured parachute with seven colours was passed
over the heads of the crowd in Fore Street and the Revd Tim
Deacon likened it to God's Holy Spirit moving through the people.
The final
worship song ‘To God be the Glory' is often sang at any time
of the year but the third verse is very apt for Pentecost:
The gifts of the Spirit
are poured out today
Equipping God's people
to serve and to pray.
To offer the Spirit to
all humankind
and speak of God's
love to the people we find…
The last words
of the celebration were in the form of a blessing proclaiming,'Jesus
Christ is Lord!' |
