Hope 08 in Brixham
Offering coffee, tea
and cakes in the Christian Community Centre, Fore St, many talented
younger members of the United Reformed Church in Brixham stepped
up to perform a wide range of well rehearsed songs, music and
dance routines, whilst the quiz was more spontaneous, demanding
a broad musical knowledge, as questions from Queen hits to Carmina
Burana were fired at the audience. |
|
Whilst members of the youth team
went about serving light refreshments, including their handmade
cakes, everyone was able to sit back at their tables and enjoy
Becky's confident and mellow jazz interpretations of classic
tunes, such as I'm in Heaven and Ain't Misbehavin', accompanied
by brother Peter on guitar. |
| In contrast the Ellis family sang together
the passionate plea of the characters from Les Miserables, in
their medley of songs from that musical, which was followed by
an explosive dance routine to ‘Hero' by Bonnie Tyler. At the end
of the afternoon Rev Chris Searle thanked everyone for their input.
This included Youth Leader Jonathan Oliverio, who helped co-ordinate
the whole event and in Chris's words played ‘a mean piano' to
accompany singing performances and provide a sing-a-long session
for everyone to join in with at the end. |
|
The aim of the afternoon
was simply for members of this church, in particular their youth
group, to join in with the Hope 08 campaign taking place across
Britain, and to demonstrate that young people are prepared to
give, and not just take.
Churches throughout
the UK are uniting together, so that people of all denominations
are working on personally devised projects within their communities. |
| The Rt. Hon. Stephen Timms MP, Chief
Secretary of the Treasury said, “We are seeing more people based
in local churches working to make a difference across their community.”
Roy Crown from ‘Youth for Christ' commented that, ‘this initiative
has the potential to be a catalyst, not just for one year. My
dream is that it seeds a movement of word and deed evangelism
which transforms lives, families and communities.' |
|
This event is one
of the many ways Christian groups in Brixham are constantly
working on projects to benefit local people, another being the
Island Club established last year, offering a popular youth
club within the town, based at the Baptist Church .
Details of the Hope
2008 nationwide initiative can be found at www.hope08.com
, showing how the whole Christian Church
is keen to work together to show how Christ's words in action
are designed to help us live together within our cities, towns
and villages. |
| There is also within the scheme an
emphasis on young people in the Church taking the lead in developing
the hope.08 website and reaching out to others through random
acts of kindness in their schools and communities. |
